Dear <<First Name>>,

Five years ago, I led the City in replacing Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day, a long-overdue acknowledgment and recognition of the original inhabitants of our land.

This action was followed in 2018  by Los Angeles’ first Indigenous Peoples Day, which brought together Los Angeles’ indigenous tribes, artists and community.

While the pandemic prevented us from celebrating these last two years, I’m excited to share that we will be bringing Indigenous Peoples Day back to Grand Park on Monday, October 10.

As the first Native American on the Los Angeles City Council, I’m deeply proud to welcome the return of this community celebration.

Our work and advocacy to uplift Indigenous voices continues, and it builds on our historic efforts five years ago to replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day in the City of Los Angeles, ushering in a larger movement.

I'd like to thank the Los Angeles City/County Native American Indian Commission, and all of the tribal and Indigenous nations who will be joining us - including the Gabrieleno Tongva Band of Mission Indians and the Fernandeno Tataviam Band of Mission Indians.

We can’t wait to see you on Monday, October 10

More details coming soon. Stay tuned!

With kind regards,

MITCH O'FARRELL

TEAM MITCH MAKING A DIFFERENCE

ATWATER VILLAGE - Our Council District 13 Clean Team does it all: bulky item pickup; litter abatement; vegetation management; and tree trimming! This week, the team responded to a local resident's request to maintain an overgrown tree in Atwater Village, creating a friendlier pedestrian experience. If you know of an area in need of service, please contact our team at (213) 207-3015
RENTAL AID ON THE WAY!
13TH DISTRICT - On Wednesday, Mitch announced a *NEW* $3 million rental aid program for struggling renters and "mom and pop" landlords living in the 13th Council District. This latest round of assistance builds on Mitch's long history of fighting on behalf of tenants, from strengthening renter protections to keeping people housed during the height of the pandemic. We expect the program to begin accepting applications in late October and will open our District Office to provide application support. Stay tuned!
STANDING WITH ARMENIA AND ARTSAKH
CITY HALL - On Friday, Mitch was honored to join Councilmembers Paul Krekorian and Paul Koretz to welcome David Babayan, Foreign Minister for the Republic of Artsakh, and an Artsakh Delegation to the Los Angeles City Council this morning. The US government must withdraw all support for Azerbaijan. We will not rest until we end the atrocities committed against Artsakh and Armenia.
MORE AFFORDABLE HOUSING PROGRESS!
13TH DISTRICT - Since Mitch first took office, more than 4,300 units of affordable housing have been built, permitted, financed or under construction in the 13th Council District. This week, we toured two of them - the Hollywood Arts Collective in Hollywood and Lucena on Court in Westlake. The result of Mitch's efforts to maximize housing affordability, together both projects will bring stability and wellness to 200 households, including seniors and artists. We're proud to be a local leader in affordable housing production. We won't let up.
LIVABILITY AND MOBILITY IMPROVEMENTS COMING SOON!
EAST HOLLYWOOD - Work is now underway on a safer, more pedestrian friendly Santa Monica Boulevard. On Thursday, we broke ground on a vision for enhanced livability and mobility on this historic corridor between Hoover Street and Western Avenue. This includes 69 new trees; bus shelters and bus pads; high visibility crosswalks; and pedestrian-scale lighting. We're proud to have identified the funding that will make this project a reality. THANK YOU to our community partners who worked closely with us to get this shovel ready, including StreetsLA, the Los Angeles Neighborhood Initiative and KYCC.
CELEBRATING BOB BERG AND JANET WORKMAN
ELYSIAN VALLEY - Mitch had a fantastic time welcoming the Frogtown Artwalk back to Elysian Valley last weekend. A supporter of this beloved event since day one, Mitch has enjoyed seeing its growth from just a few blocks to the community-wide celebration it is today. We also know it wouldn’t be possible without the selfless volunteers who give countless hours to its production. We honored two of them on Sunday: Bob Berg and Janet Workman. Longtime residents of Elysian Valley, we thank Bob and Janet for their years of service to the community.
CALLING ALL ANIMAL LOVERS
LOS ANGELES - Los Angeles’ six Animal Services shelters are full with more than 1,400 dogs, 1,300 cats, and 400+ pocket pets, including rabbits, hamsters, and Guinea pigs. As they near capacity, Animal Services is looking to YOU, our animal-loving community, to help these amazing pets find new homes. To encourage the adoption of dogs and cats and to kick off October as ‘Adopt A Shelter Dog’ month, Animal Services will offer reduced adoption fees on Sunday, October 2. Adoption fees for dogs are $51 (not including $20 license) and $75 for puppies. Adoption fees for cats and kittens will be waived thanks to a generous grant from the ASPCA.
