Dear <<First Name>>,

I’ve been a renter for most of my life and, as a child, my family repeatedly faced eviction.

I understand struggle and have always fought on behalf of renters who also struggleespecially during the height of the pandemic. This included a $1 million rental assistance program that ultimately helped 500 13th District households stay in their homes and served as the model for a citywide program that totaled more than $300 million.

Even as we emerge from the pandemic, many households continue to struggle. To help them, I’m launching a *NEW* $3 million rental aid program that will provide grants of up to $5,000 to struggling households in the 13th District. This new fund will help renters stay in their homes, and will also help “mom and pop” landlords keep up with their mortgages, preventing unscrupulous corporate interests from buying up properties.
I expect this new aid program to be approved by the City Council soon, and that it will begin accepting applications in late October. The program will be available to 13th District renters who are still economically burdened by COVID-19 and make 80% or less of Area Median Income. If you’re a household of two, that means a combined income of about $76,000 or less. If you’re a household of four, that means a combined income of about $95,000 or less. Both tenants and their “mom and pop” landlords will be able to apply.
Once the rental aid program is up and running, I’ll provide more details on how to apply - online or in person. We’ll even be opening up our Echo Park District Office to assist people with their applications.
From the bottom of my heart, I can assure you that I will always do everything I can to keep people housed and safe.
With kind regards,
