Dear <<First Name>>,

In addressing the crisis of homelessness, my team and I believe in a comprehensive approach, and putting compassion into action: leading with outreach and services to get unhoused Angelenos into safe, secure, managed environments.

This approach is why, outside of the downtown area, our 13th District has produced the most units of affordable housing, as well as the most permanent housing units for formerly homeless people.

This approach is why, in just the last year, we’ve brought online hundreds of beds or units for unhoused people, including two Tiny Home Villages and the first City-managed Safe Sleep site. The 13th District is now the proud home of three “A Bridge Home” shelters, and we are piloting the City’s first unarmed crisis response program, in which mental health practitioners respond to 911 calls related to homelessness, instead of armed police.

We are meeting people where they are, and providing services and housing like never before.

One of the most important tools in this work is the annual Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count, a critical component in getting vital information that helps provide an accurate picture of the state of homelessness in Los Angeles and deliver services where they are most needed.

Each year, my team and I participate in the Homeless Count, and I’d like to invite you to join us for this year’s count, which will take place on the following dates:
  • Tuesday, February 22, 2022: San Fernando and San Gabriel Valleys
  • Wednesday, February 23, 2022: West Los Angeles, Southeast Los Angeles,  and the South Bay
  • Thursday, February 24, 2022: Antelope Valley, South Los Angeles, and Metro Los Angeles (including the 13th District)
This is a truly empowering and inspiring way to help those who need it the most. To sign up to participate, please visit www.theycountwillyou.org.

Thanks for being a part of this important effort.

Be safe and well,

MITCH O'FARRELL

Single-use plastic targeted in new city council measure [Spectrum]

TEAM MITCH MAKING A DIFFERENCE

RAMPART VILLAGE- Our Council District 13 Clean Team completes nearly 900 small and large projects each year. This includes areas like Juanita Avenue, just south of Beverly Boulevard, where the Team recently removed illegal dumping and other trash. If you see an area in need of service, please contact us at (213) 207-3015.

ENDING PLASTIC POLLUTION IN LOS ANGELES

CITY HALL - Los Angeles is serious about ending plastic pollution. On Wednesday, Councilmember O'Farrell led a landmark, unanimous vote to phase out single-use plastics - utensils, for example - at City facilities and City-sponsored events. The vote builds on several actions we have already taken - including reducing single-use foodware accessories, plastic straws on request, and reducing plastic bags. This is in addition to our ongoing ‘LA100’ plan to achieve 100% carbon-free energy by 2035. Thank you to the many environmental advocates who have worked with us to create a plastics free future. We’re leading by example and are well on our way to this goal.

INVESTING IN CLEANER AIR

NORTH HOLLYWOOD - We’re charged and ready for a Greener LA! On Tuesday, Councilmember O'Farrell joined City and Federal leaders to launch the Center for Green Innovation - a new nerve center for clean technology in Los Angeles - and toured the latest generation of city vehicles, all powered by green energy, including street sweepers, electric bikes and pick-up trucks. Investments like these will not only help us reduce our carbon emissions but will result in cleaner, healthier air for all Angelenos. To stay up-to-date and get involved with these efforts, please subscribe to our Greener LA Updates

SUPPORTING BLACK-OWNED BUSINESSES

RAMPART VILLAGE - In celebration of Black History Month, Councilmember O'Farrell visited with Wendi Williams-Stern - owner of Studio Unbiased, a custom clothing designer in Rampart Village and one of nearly 100 women-owned businesses that our team financially assisted during the pandemic. From her humble beginnings in her Miracle Mile apartment more than twenty years ago, Wendi now counts some of Hollywood's most recognizable stars as her clients, including Oprah Winfrey, Helen Mirren and Mary J. Blige (did you see her outfit during the Super Bowl?). We're proud that Wendi and her business call the 13th District home and wish her many more years of success!

LEADING WITH HOUSING AND SERVICES

HOLLYWOOD - There was no better way to spend the morning of Valentine's Day than by introducing ourselves to the residents of the Gardner Street Women's A Bridge Home Housing Center - one of three "A Bridge Home" (ABH) facilities in the 13th District. With on-site services provided by the Weingart Center, Gardner Street provides shelter to nearly 20 formerly unhoused women, including Sasha, who we had the privilege of meeting and - along with other women at Gardner Street - is now on a pathway to wellness, stability and permanent housing. We remain laser-focused on bringing unhoused Angelenos as quickly as possible into safe, secured managed environments. ABH is just one example of this approach in action - and we've got more comprehensive housing on the way, including interim and permanent sites.

CELEBRATING LOS ANGELES' LATEST CHAMPIONS

LOS ANGELES - Team Mitch congratulates our Los Angeles Rams for their incredible Super Bowl Victory last weekend! Los Angeles truly is a City of Champions.

PRESIDENTS' DAY HOLIDAY HOURS

CITY HALL - In observance of the Presidents' Day holiday, our offices will be closed on Monday, February 21. We will resume normal operations on Tuesday, February 22. Have a restful and safe holiday!
