Dear <<First Name>>,

I will always stand with and fight for the transgender Community in Los Angeles and anywhere else.

Growing up gay, I struggled with acceptance and anxiety throughout my childhood, and have lived the challenges faced by my community.

My personal experience has informed my work on LGBTQ+ issues on the Los Angeles City Council, particularly in uplifting the transgender community:

✅ In 2016, I spearheaded the creation of the City’s Transgender Advisory Council (TAC), which advises the Mayor, City Council, elected officials, and governmental agencies on issues of importance to Los Angeles’ LGBTQ+ community.

✅ Since 2017, I have been proud to support and help fund the Midnight Stroll, an innovative program which addresses the needs of unsheltered LGBTQ+ individuals. I helped launch this program in partnership with the Transgender Advisory Council, LAPD and the Asian Pacific AIDS Intervention Team.

✅In 2019, I led a delegation to the Mexico - U.S. border to provide relief to asylum seekers living at the border as a result of the Trump Administration’s draconian immigration policies. This relief included food and hygiene items for LGBTQ+ asylum speakers.

We continued and built on these efforts during this year’s Transgender Day of Visibility, which included:

Helping Our LGBTQ+ Unhoused Community
Two weeks ago, I joined our partners at TAC, APAIT and the Imperial Court of Los Angeles for the Midnight Stroll. We assembled nearly 100 care packages, which we later distributed to unhoused individuals across the 13th District. These packages included water, food, clothing, blankets and information about HIV testing, in addition to other critical resources.

Our Libraries are for Everyone
Our libraries are cathedrals of knowledge, where we can escape into our imaginations and learn about the experiences of others. They are also safe spaces, offering robust resources and services for trans and gender diverse Angelenos. To highlight these resources, I partnered with Los Angeles Public Library Chief Librarian John Szabo; Civil + Human Rights and Equity Department (LA Civil Rights); Channel 35; TAC Chairwoman Karina Samala; and TAC members Eden Luna and James Wen to create a PSA about the array of services available at public library branches for Los Angeles’ transgender community.

Connecting Our Trans Community to Employers
Trans people face unique barriers in the workplace. I joined LA Civil Rights and the TAC to host a virtual job fair for LA’s transgender and non-binary community. We connected more than 60 attendees with 12 employers, including the FBI, Project Angel Food, The AMAAD Institute, and more. The job fair, hosted on Transgender Day of Visibility, is one of many upward mobility and community empowerment events I am championing.

Sending a Message of Inclusion
Finally, my team helped cap Transgender Day of Visibility by lighting City Hall with the trans pride colors. In doing so, we reaffirmed our commitment to uplifting trans and non-binary lives each and every day, through action and collaboration with the trans community.

If you’re trans and in need of resources, I see you, and my team is here to help. Please contact us at (213) 207-3015.

With kind regards,

Historic Filipinotown Eastern Gateway Project to be Installed April 1 [Fox11]

GREATER WILSHIRE - A little rain couldn't stop the Council District 13 Clean Team from beautifying the district. In addition to many other projects this week - small and large - they hit the streets of Greater Wilshire to remove illegal dumping, palm fronds and other items, making a BIG difference for local residents. If you know of an area in need of service, please contact us at (213) 207-3015.

CITY HALL - On Tuesday, Councilmember O'Farrell celebrated and shared a heartfelt goodbye with Assistant Chief Bea Girmala, who retired after 37 years of distinguished service at the Los Angeles Police Department. Bea’s impact has been felt far and wide, including here in the 13th District where she worked with our team for many years to bring more resources and protections to our LGBTQ+ community living in Hollywood. Thank you Bea for being a model of compassion, a voice for the marginalized and representing the very best of public service. Your work will live on in each of us.

FAIRFAX DISTRICT - On Thursday, Councilmember O'Farrell sat down with Dr. Hillel Newman, Consul General of Israel to the Pacific Southwest, and Jerry Levey, Member of the City of Los Angeles Innovation and Performance Commission to discuss issues of importance to Los Angeles' Jewish community. This included our mutual efforts to combat anti-Semitism in Los Angeles and beyond. We look forward to working with Dr. Newman and our partners in the Jewish community to dismantle anti-Semitic hate and bigotry.

HOLLYWOOD - One of the 13th District’s crown jewels, we're proud to share that Hollywood Forever Cemetery is now a Historic Cultural Monument - the 28th HCM in the 13th District since Councilmember O'Farrell took office. Preserving Los Angeles’ cultural sites like Hollywood Forever isn’t just because of its history - it’s also still a center for activity, whether it’s the wildlife roaming the cemetery’s grounds, visitors coming to pay their respects to their favorite stars and family members, or the beloved Cinespia film series. Our action ensures Hollywood Forever will be appreciated and enjoyed by future generations of Angelenos.

ELYSIAN VALLEY - As we get ready for summer and hotter months ahead, be sure to cool off at Frogtown Brewery - one of 179 businesses that we assisted during the pandemic with a small business grant. Founded by long-time friends Adam Kestel and Mike Voss, along with another friend Gustavo Rojas, Frogtown began with a simple idea - the creation of the highest quality handcrafted beers in a space built for community connection and interaction. While Frogtown Brewery has come a long way since 2016, it has stayed faithful to its founding ethos. Thank you Frogtown Brewery for bringing local residents together and all that you do to add to the character of the 13th District.

ECHO PARK - We had a wonderful time meeting with an organized group of local seniors in Echo Park on Thursday. We shared exciting updates about senior-focused improvements coming to Echo Park Lake, in addition to listening to their concerns and identifying areas where we can work together. Many thanks to our seniors for their involvement in the neighborhood and making a difference.
