Dear <<First Name>>,
From making it easier to compost your food scraps to addressing the historic drought, this week brought exciting updates about our efforts to create a Greener Los Angeles.
Taking on the Drought
At yesterday's Energy, Climate Change, Environmental Justice and LA River committee, we received a report from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) regarding the ongoing drought’s impact on Los Angeles’ water supplies, ratepayers, and energy production. Resulting from a motion that I introduced with Councilmembers Krekorian and Koretz, LADWP shared in their presentation that Angelenos are stepping up and taking significant steps to reduce their dependence on water. In June, Angelenos cut their water use by 9% compared to June 2021 with this trend continuing into the first weeks of July. LADWP will continue to report back to our committee as we collectively work to reduce our water intake.
Recycling Organic Waste
In another win for our environment, I went door-to-door in Atwater Village with Los Angeles Sanitation and Environment, educating local residents about the expansion of the City’s food scrap recycling program and distributing food scrap collection pails. As Chair of the Energy, Climate Change, Environmental Justice and LA River Committee, I’m proud to have played a leading role in this program’s phased expansion, which will help us divert organic waste from landfills - the third largest source of methane emissions, a potent greenhouse gas, in California. This is in addition to my direction to create a robust outreach and education strategy. Here's what you can expect in the coming months: the initiative will roll out to all Los Angeles Sanitation and Environment customers by the end of the calendar year - that’s nearly 700,000 Angelenos. We look forward to sharing more updates and educating you about this groundbreaking initiative.
