Dear <<First Name>>,

Arts and culture are what make a city more livable.

Across Los Angeles but especially true in the 13th District, we are lucky to have a live theater community that contributes greatly to the City’s cultural and economic well-being.

In the best of times, intimate theaters often operate on thin margins. I know this firsthand having performed in several productions as an actor on many of these stages decades ago.

When the pandemic hit, these challenges were magnified and our live theater community was devastated. I knew I had to help, which is why I partnered with the Department of Cultural Affairs to create a Theater Emergency Response Program (ERP) in support of our community.

On Thursday, I was proud to present 19 live theater organizations in Council District 13 with grants of $5,000 each. These grants are funded through the Arts Development Fee, a program I helped revive in 2014 while chair of the Los Angeles City Council’s Arts Committee.

These funds will help with operational costs including rent, salaries, artist fees, videography, marketing, website administration, and other related costs. This assistance will not only help our theater artists do what they do best - create and perform - but also help their organizations stay afloat through challenging economic times.

As Los Angeles evolves, we must continue to invest in our collective arts and culture. I’m proud to do everything I can to ensure Los Angeles is a place where people can live, work, and thrive.

With kind regards,

MITCH O'FARRELL

Councilmember O'Farrell reflects on Native American Heritage Month [LA This Week]

TRANSGENDER DAY OF REMEMBRANCE

LOS ANGELES - November 20 provides an opportunity to pay tribute and remember the Transgender lives lost to violence, including the forty-seven individuals taken from us so far in 2021. In observance of this day, Councilmember O'Farrell partnered with the City's Transgender Advisory Council, the Civil + Human Rights and Equity Department, and Channel 35 Studios to produce a Public Service Announcement to bring attention to combatting violence against the transgender and nonbinary communities. With anti-trans violence and bigotry on the rise nationally, it is vitally important that we continue to seek justice and work collectively to build an inclusive Los Angeles, where everyone can live safely and with dignity.

SUPPORTING OUR LIVE THEATERS

EAST HOLLYWOOD - On Thursday, as part of Councilmember O'Farrell's Council District 13 Theater Emergency Response Program, our team awarded 19 theaters across the 13th District with grants of $5,000, each one helping these incredible artists do what they do best - create and perform - while keeping them afloat during these challenging economic times. Thank you to the Department of Cultural Affairs for partnering with us in this endeavor and the Fountain Theatre for hosting us!

HELPING FOOD INSECURE HOUSEHOLDS

ECHO PARK - On Thursday, our team continued its ongoing efforts to help food insecure households in the 13th District. In partnership with the Salvadoran American Leadership and Educational Fund and SEE-LA, we distributed thousands of pounds of fresh and nutritious food to more than 100 households. From leading local efforts to create the nation's strongest eviction protections to these monthly food distributions, our team has been laser-focused on one goal during the pandemic: keeping local residents housed and fed.

POSTPONED: HIFI EASTERN GATEWAY OPENING

HISTORIC FILIPINOTOWN - Unfortunately, due to unforeseen challenges related to labor and supply chain issues affecting our nation and world, the Historic Filipinotown Eastern Gateway project will be delayed. The event originally scheduled for Saturday, December 11th will be postponed to a later date. If you RSVPed for the event, we will be sending you more information as it becomes available. Please RSVP or visit bit.ly/HiFiGateway to continue to receive updates. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

CELEBRATING TWO SPIRIT IDENTITY

CITY HALL - In observance of Native American Heritage Month, we lit Los Angeles' skies Tuesday evening to bring attention to Two Spirit and LGBTQ+ identities in the Native American community. By doing so, we're increasing the cultural visibility of all Two Spirit people, who are uniquely vulnerable to gender-based violence, and shine a light on their leadership and work to create a more inclusive society.
