Dear <<First Name>>

With Earth Day around the corner, I am proud to report that yesterday I presided over a unanimous vote on the Energy, Climate Change, Environmental Justice and River Committee committee, to recommend approval of an ordinance that will reduce our reliance on single-use disposable foodware items.

Here are some of the key provisions and benefits:
  • Beginning on 11/15/21, food and beverage facilities with 26 or more employees, as well as third party food delivery services, will be able to provide foodware accessories to customers only upon request. Beginning on 4/20/22, all other food and beverage facilities must comply as well. Disposable foodware accessories include items like disposable plastic straws, utensils, condiment packets, cup lids, etc.
  • Rather than a focus on enforcement, this action seeks to reverse the normalization of massive foodware plastic waste and consumption, diverting foodware accessories from our landfills and waterways like the Los Angeles River.
  • In addition to reducing our fossil fuel consumption, the ordinance will save our struggling restaurants money, who prior to COVID-19, spent $19 billion on disposable items annually.
  • The ordinance sets the stage for the eventual phase out of single-use plastics entirely.
I’m thankful to Councilmembers Krekorian, Koretz, and Blumenfield for first proposing this ordinance that builds on my ‘straws on request’ ordinance from  2019. We’re continuing to lead the way toward a less wasteful, less toxic, more sustainable future.

Best,

MITCH O’FARRELL
