Dear <<First Name>>,

Our small businesses are the backbone of the local economy.

I know this firsthand. Having worked at and managed small businesses for years before beginning my journey in public service, I understand the challenges faced by so many.

These challenges grew more acute during the pandemic. In response, my office provided direct financial assistance to 179 struggling local businesses with grants of $5000 each through my Small Business Grant Program.

I was the only Councilmember to enact such a program, and I’m proud to share that nearly 50% of the businesses we helped are owned by a woman or a person of color, who have been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic.

Now, the City is leaning in even further and providing additional assistance to small businesses with “Comeback Checks.”

Using funds that I helped approve in this fiscal year’s City budget, the Comeback Checks program is a $25 million fund that will provide grants of $5000 to small businesses across the City. To be eligible, small businesses must meet the following criteria:

✅ Must have experienced financial hardship as a result of COVID-19
✅ Must be located and operating within the boundaries of the City of Los Angeles
✅ Must have been in operation since March 1, 2020
✅ Must have a City Business Tax Registration Certificate (BTRC) in good standing
✅ Corporations, limited liability companies and limited partnerships must have an “ACTIVE” status with the California Secretary of State

If you are eligible, you can apply for the third and final round of “Comeback Checks” starting this Monday, January 24. Small businesses have until Friday, February 4 at 11:59 PM to apply. You can learn more by clicking the link below:

AT YOUR SERVICE ON A NEW CORNER

GREATER WILSHIRE - Last weekend, we hosted our 77th Councilmember in Your Corner event at Robert Burns Park in Greater Wilshire - one of the many new communities our team now has the privilege of representing as a result of redistricting. Together, we tackled illegal dumping, picked up litter, removed palm fronds and made a real difference for local residents who are now in the 13th District. Thank you to everyone who made the morning such a success. We can't wait to see you in the neighborhood!

MEETING NEW NEIGHBORS AND BUSINESSES

LARCHMONT VILLAGE - Many thanks to the Larchmont Boulevard Association for organizing a wonderful meet and greet on Tuesday evening with residents and businesses who now call the 13th District home. With an abundance of small businesses and committed residents with deep roots in the neighborhood, Team Mitch is privileged to represent this historic community. We’re at your service and look forward partnering in the weeks and months ahead.

CELEBRATING OUR SMALL BUSINESSES

GREATER WILSHIRE - Councilmember O'Farrell continued his tour of new 13th District businesses at Gon Ji Am - a beloved Korean-American owned business at 4653 Beverly Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90004. Owned and operated by Si Ja Lee, Gon Ji Am, has been a neighborhood staple for thirty years, serving hearty Korean stews, seafood pancakes and their famous dumplings. Thank you Gon Ji Am for adding to our local economy and anchoring the neighborhood for all of these years. We're so excited to have you in the 13th District!

REMEMBERING MLK'S LEGACY

HOLLYWOOD - On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, it was a privilege to discuss Dr. King's legacy with members of the Mu Lambda Omega Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. - the first intercollegiate historically African American sorority. Thank you Mu Lambda Omega Chapter of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. for making service a central part of your mission and carrying forward Dr. King's work to create a just and equitable society.
