Dear <<First Name>>,
At yesterday's Energy, Climate Change, Environmental Justice & River Committee meeting, we advanced an important initiative that will help us decarbonize Los Angeles’ public buildings.
First, some background:
In November 2021, the City Council approved my initiative to fully decarbonize Los Angeles’ public building stock, which *totals more than 550 buildings.*
This wasn’t political theater either - we backed up this nation-leading proposal with a $110 million investment that I secured in this year’s budget, allowing us to begin this work immediately.
Even with this effort underway, however, the City continues to purchase gas-powered appliances, equipment and vehicles. If we’re serious about building electrification and reducing carbon emissions, we must focus on the equipment in those buildings as well.
This is why I introduced a motion - approved by the committee yesterday - that would require City Departments to create plans - and timelines - to end purchases of ALL gas-powered vehicles, building appliances and equipment.
This is groundbreaking work and, by taking yesterday's action, we’re ensuring a comprehensive, coordinated approach to building decarbonization.
With kind regards,
MITCH O'FARRELL
