Dear <<First Name>>,

This was a big week for bicycle and pedestrian safety in the 13th District.

Always a top priority of mine, my team and I have brought three multimodal, non-vehicular bridges across the Los Angeles River; over 150 curb ramps; more than 30 Metro Bike Share stations; over 30 new traffic signals; and nearly 300 STOP signs.

Here’s what we did this week to enhance safety and connectivity:

✅ I’ve long supported the “Sunset4Allconcept that proposes protected bike lanes, new shade structures, enhanced bus shelters, and increased connectivity on a 3+ mile stretch of Sunset Blvd. To help bring these ideas to fruition, I’ve asked City departments to coordinate, review, and report on the proposed Sunset4All improvements;

✅ On Riverside Drive, we took a big step to connect our shared path at the River to new, protected bike lanes that connect people to Elysian Park via Riverside and Stadium Way;

On Stadium Way itself, it’s long past time to construct a new, ADA-accessible sidewalk that also leads into Elysian Park - and, believe it or not, currently no sidewalk exists on this stretch. So we are working to fix this, too. I’ve also asked that a pedestrian-activated signalized crosswalk be included as part of these improvements.

✅ We also completed the installation of four new speed tables along Riverside Drive at Birkdale Street and Elmgrove Street. These new safety improvements function like speed humps and will help slow down traffic on this busy corridor, creating a safer experience for pedestrians and cyclists.

These projects don’t just happen; they take a village to move them from an idea to reality. I want to thank and acknowledge all the stakeholders who have played a role - Sunset4All, the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition, local neighborhood councils and community organizations, and the many residents who not only advocate for these improvements, but are out in the community doing outreach and building consensus.

I look forward to continuing to champion these types of projects, and to working with partners to see them come to life.

Be safe and well,

MITCH O'FARRELL

TEAM MITCH MAKING A DIFFERENCE

EAST HOLLYWOOD - This week, our Council District 13 Clean Team picked up more than *six tons of waste and illegal dumping* throughout the district. Their work included Heliotrope Drive and Rosewood Avenue, where the team removed discarded furniture, trash and other debris. If you have an area in need of service, please contact our team at (213) 207-3015.
STATEMENT ON BERNSTEIN HIGH SCHOOL
HOLLYWOOD - Responding to the tragic death of a teenager at Bernstein High School on Tuesday, Councilmember O'Farrell visited with parents, school administrators and released the following statement:

"This is a horrific tragedy, and my heart breaks for the community of families and friends who are dealing with unimaginable grief. The illicit drug trade catering to vulnerable populations, especially children, deserves our immediate national attention. We need all government and health agencies to act now and get fentanyl off the streets and out of our communities. It is literally a matter of life and death."

REDUCING THE URBAN HEAT ISLAND EFFECT
EAST HOLLYWOOD - As we confront hotter days and the climate emergency, our team is committed to keeping Angelenos safe and cool during extreme heat events. Last week, in partnership with StreetsLA, we applied "Cool Streets" coating to Berendo Street between Lexington Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard, in addition to planting shade trees. One of fourteen streets that will receive this treatment in our district, the coating helps to reflect the sun's heat, reducing road surface temperatures by as much as ten to fifteen degrees. Be on the lookout for a Cool Street in your neighborhood.
SEPTEMBER 23: FROGTOWN ARTWALK RETURNS!
ELYSIAN VALLEY - The Frogtown Artwalk is back! As we prepare for the return of this beloved annual event, we’re kicking off the festivities on Friday, September 23 at 7pm by screening one of our favorite Los Angeles cult classics - Repo Man! Filled with memorable lines and starring Emilio Estevez and Harry Dean Stanton, Repo Man satirizes 1980s America, consumerism and the Atomic Age. We’ll see you on Friday, September 23, at 7pm!
HOMELESSNESS DROPS 23% IN THE 13TH
13TH DISTRICT - Homelessness decreased 23% in the 13th District since 2020 - the result of Team Mitch's comprehensive approach to housing, services, outreach, unarmed response, and more. Though we still have work to do across Los Angeles, and though the size of encampments grew due to pandemic protocols, our success in reducing homelessness in the 13th District proves that our comprehensive approach works. Let's replicate this across the rest of Los Angeles!

AT YOUR SERVICE: WEEKLY SNAPSHOT
13TH DISTRICT - Team Mitch is at your service each day of the week, rain or shine. Last weekend, we were busy across the District. First, in Glassell Park, where we partnered with StreetsLA on a sidewalk repair project outside of Fletcher Drive Elementary - a top priority for parents and teachers. Then, we completed two tree trimming projects in East Hollywood, helping to maintain the health and integrity of our tree canopy. If you have a neighborhood improvement in mind, please contact our team.
CELEBRATING HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH
LOS ANGELES - September 15 marked the start of Hispanic Heritage Month, when we honor and celebrate our Latino and Hispanic communities. The 13th District is blessed with many communities hailing from Latin America, including Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America and South America - and we are grateful to work each day with so many wonderful non-profits, small businesses and residents who strengthen our culture, local economy and neighborhoods. ¡Viva las comunidades Hispanas de Latino América!
