Dear <<First Name>>,

Innovative and compassionate approaches to address homelessness in the 13th District include the creation of Safe Sleep Villages and Tiny Home Villages. This also includes bringing outreach teams into the process who have the lived experience of being homeless themselves, and are sometimes formerly incarcerated and in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. Cutting-edge construction techniques to expedite our supply of permanent supportive housing are also part of the solution.

I'm happy to share that last week the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors added to these efforts by approving $116 million in funding for Hollywood 2.0 - an innovative five-year pilot program that will provide the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health with the resources to address the acute mental and physical health needs of people experiencing homelessness in Hollywood.

Hollywood 2.0 complements my team’s own work to bring housing, services and innovative solutions to address homelessness in Hollywood:

✅In recent years, thanks to its multiple transit options and its location within the urban core, Hollywood has seen more construction than in other parts of the City. This doesn’t happen on its own. By working with the development community and City Planning, my office has helped ensure that 32% of all housing units approved and under construction in Q2 2021 in the Hollywood Entertainment District were affordable. This includes great projects like the Hollywood Arts Collective, a 151-unit, 100% affordable building for artists under construction on a former surface parking lot in the heart of Hollywood.

✅Brought online three A Bridge Home Shelter sites, representing hundreds of beds for people experiencing homelessness  in a managed, safe, secure environment.

✅ Launched a Safe Parking Site for people experiencing homelessness in their vehicles.

✅ In partnership with the Asian Pacific AIDS Intervention Team, the Los Angeles Transgender Advisory Council and the Los Angeles Police Department, I launched the Midnight Stroll - an innovative outreach program that addresses the health and safety needs of unsheltered LGBTQ individuals in Hollywood. Since 2017, I have secured funding for this critical program every year.

These projects are the result of purposeful action to put people experiencing homelessness on a path to wellness and stability, while ensuring that our public rights of way are safe and accessible.

I'm thankful to Supervisor Sheila Kuehl and the amazing, dedicated community in Hollywood, including Hollywood4ward, for helping to bring this forward and saying yes to these groundbreaking approaches.

By working together, we can have a lasting impact on the homelessness crisis.

With kind regards,

MITCH O'FARRELL

SHINING A LIGHT ON MISSING INDIGENOUS WOMEN

CITY HALL - In observance of Native American Heritage Month, Los Angeles’ skies were lit on Monday evening to bring attention to the crisis of missing and murdered indigenous women and girls. Indigenous women in the U.S. are believed to face higher rates of violence with many missing person cases going unreported. Yet, the challenges of collecting cross-jurisdictional data, coupled with the lack of a national database, prevents the holistic understanding that is needed to respond effectively. This must change. To learn more about this crisis and how you can make a difference, please visit the National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center.
