Hello, Kia ora, and welcome back to issue 2 from the Establishment Unit

It’s been a very busy month for us with not a lot of weeks to go before we go live with the new Ministry on 1st July. As an EU team, we are working hard on ensuring that the disability support services people receive will continue without disruption, that staff are in place for day one as well as all the foundation work required to start a ministry. It’s a very exciting journey to be on for all of us and it’s fair to say we are all learning a lot about the sector and the community we are working for.

If you have any specific questions on our work, please email us on: Establishmentunit@msd.govt.nz

Update on the name

The consultation for the new ministry's name has now closed and we will provide you with an update on the next steps soon.

What else can you have your say on?

Naming alone is not our only focus as we are sure you can imagine. As our co-Chair of the Community Steering Group, Gerri Pomeroy put so well:

“Yes, the name is important, and I’m delighted this ministry will be the first to have a name in all three of Aotearoa’s official languages, but there is so much more the community can contribute. Hearing from disabled people and making sure their voices have impact, is vital to ensuring the new ministry has input to help shape it’s future. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity so we really want disabled people and whānau to get involved.”

We strongly encourage you to keep an eye on our engagement platform and Facebook page to continue to have your say on a range of topics or give us your ideas on the ideas wall.

We are also working on other formats for you to connect with us which includes freepost, 0800, SMS, stakeholder networks, face to face and very soon, in as many public spaces as we can, we will be getting the message of the new ministry and its purpose out there in informative brochures and posters. Feel free to get in touch if you would like us to send you a copy in the mail.

What does the future hold for the new Ministry?

From 1st July under the new chief executive the Ministry will:

  • Drive better outcomes for all disabled people
  • Lead and coordinate cross-government strategic disability policy
  • Work to deliver and transform disability support services
  • Progress work on the broader transformation of the wider disability system

The exact details under each of these headings will be the role of the new ministry under the leadership of the new CE. The appointment of this vital role is being managed by the Public Service Commission and we understand it has been going well to appoint someone by the time the new ministry starts in July. We will make sure to let you know the progress on this once we have it.

We encourage all our important community members to give feedback on the future ministry’s work in whatever format you find easiest. Please see below for all the ways we currently have available. We aim to have more over the coming weeks.
