JUAN VASQUEZ APPOINTED PRESIDENT OF  2017 JERSEY CITY PUERTO RICAN HERITAGE DAY FESTIVAL AND PARADE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
January 2, 2017

Jersey City, NJ … Candidate for President of the Jersey City Puerto Rican Heritage Day Festival and Parade local Jersey City Artist, Juan “Cheese” Vasquez was appointed on Sunday, December 4, 2016 by Jersey City’s community majority vote. With a focus on returning the direction of the JC Puerto Rican Heritage Day Festival and Parade to Arts and Culture, his message remained consistent throughout his strong campaign.  In addition, he ensured that honor was given to Francisco “Junito” Rodriguez posthumously for his dedication and work with the community. Rodriguez intended to throw his bid in for the presidency. He opted to unite with Vasquez prior to his untimely passing two weeks before the elections. Vasquez promises to bring forth the vision he and Rodriguez shared for this annual event and parade.

A Jersey City native who has served the community to uplift and support fellow artists, provide a safe environment to further educate our youth and give back to the community, Vasquez and his supporters created a strong marketing campaign shared widely throughout various social media outlets. This active and enterprising artist also made certain to reach out to all Puerto Rican communities in Jersey City with his message. As a result, the community appointed him President of the Jersey City Puerto Rican Heritage Day Festival and Parade.

Vasquez wholeheartedly recognizes the win was only possible because of community support.  The clear strong message of his belief that all facets of the Puerto Rican culture must have representation in the festivals and parades, young and old alike, make it that much more significant for him to be in this role.

Dedicated to achieving the vision of Jersey City’s Puerto Rican community President Vasquez is excited to embrace this new level of community involvement.

About the Jersey City Puerto Rican Heritage Festival & Parade

Founded in 1961 out of a need for cultural identification by Rafael Rodriguez, Diego Berrios, Juan Benitez, Primitivo Valle, Rafael Bou and Santiago Bonilla, the group organized the first Puerto Rican Day Parade in Jersey City.

Its 56 year history has grown from a small marching group into what is considered to be the largest parade celebrating Puerto Rican culture in New Jersey. A yearlong event in the planning, this cultural affair includes events that celebrate the diversity of Puerto Rican culture and its influence through Culinary Arts, Artisans, Bomba & Plena, Dance, Percussion, Poetry, Music and Pageantry, to name a few.

A calendar of events will be provided along with information on Volunteering, Sponsorship, Vendor sign up and performances in the upcoming weeks.

The 57th Annual Jersey City Puerto Rican Heritage Festival and Parade honors the late Francisco “Junito” Rodriguez as a proud member of the Jersey City Puerto Rican community who sponsored different organizations during his lifetime in Jersey City.
About Juan “Cheese” Vasquez

As an Artist, Community Leader, Educator and mentor Juan “Cheese” Vasquez can be found in the forefront of the Puerto Rican Heritage, Arts & Culture movement of Jersey City. Born in Newark and raised in Jersey City, his roots run deep through a community that is strengthened by his passion and connection with people through the Arts, Music and communication.

Working one on one with startup companies in Jersey City, Cheese has earned the respect of his peers through his no nonsense business approach and the generosity of his time and talent as a graphics designer, developing logos and artwork. Painting since 1984, Vasquez continually motivates those around him through his art to do better, mentor the youth and puts events together to unite the community he loves. His efforts have been recognized in a variety of ways: JC PR Parade Artist of the Year, JC PR Parade Man of the Year, and recognized by Roberto Clemente Association for Community Service.

Founder and owner of Redemption Art & Music Store (Jersey City, NJ) Vasquez utilizes his vast connections and talents to spread the word and his works through painting, graphics, finding new visuals for his T-shirt company and for others in the community. When he isn’t creating, educating or motivating through action, his time is spent expanding his horizons, strengthening his love of the neighborhood he calls home and volunteering. His volunteer efforts are focused on good and positive organizations, such as PACO (Jersey City, NJ): those that directly help the community. Outreach programs such as PACO hit home for him.

This "go to artist" embraced the next logical stage in his growth as a community leader by choosing to run for the 57th annual Jersey City Puerto Rican Heritage Festival & Parade Presidential seat. Having previously served on the organization’s committee, his experience in team development and attracting various cultural elements such as Bomba & Plena, Salsa, Art, Music, Culinary Arts, Military and community involvement  make Vasquez a strong presence and President of the 2017 festival. His approach of change for the people is what sparked his involvement and development of new ideas for an exciting 2017 festival.
