Volunteer News

BUMPER EDITION!
We have lots to share in this edition of the newsletter, so please take your time to read through and let us know if you have any questions or comments.

Many thanks, as always, to those of you who have helped us out with events and collection days over the past month. We have several more events coming up, including our big Summer Art Fair and party at Trumpeter's House in June, so please check the dates and details below and let us know if you are able to help.

It's time for another Volunteer Social! Volunteers' Week runs 1st- 7th June this year and we thought it would be nice to arrange an event during this week. The date we have chosen is Thursday, 6th June 6-8pm and the venue is Penny Wade House in Richmond. Please see further details below. I appreciate that this is short notice, but I really hope that you can make it, even if only briefly!

Finally, it is with a bit of a heavy heart that I need to let you know that I will be leaving SPEAR in early June. I will have been with the organisation almost 5 years and during that time I have had the pleasure of meeting and getting to know so many of you and I have never failed to be inspired by your commitment to supporting the work that we do in a huge variety of ways. A replacement will be recruited in due course and you will be kept informed of that, but for those of you actively volunteering with us, please don't hesitate to contact your line managers or our resources team, should you need anything in the meantime. I hope to have an opportunity to say goodbye in person to some of you either at the Volunteer Social or during the course of the next couple of weeks. I hope our paths will cross again in the future and very much look forward to that.

Thank you!

Catherine Comerford 1,000 hours Volunteering Award!

Catherine is one of our longest-serving volunteers. Since starting with SPEAR in 2012, Catherine has undertaken various volunteer roles, but for the past 4 years she has been a loyal volunteer receptionist at Penny Wade House. We were therefore delighted for Penny Wade staff and residents to join Stuart, SPEAR's Chief Executive, in presenting a 1,000 hours volunteering certificate to Catherine earlier this month. Well done Catherine and thank you!

Student placements at SPEAR

SPEAR are always delighted when we can take an active role in inspiring young people to get involved in our charity through volunteering. We have hosted multiple St Mary's University students on placements at SPEAR, mostly in the Fundraising Team, but one student last year volunteered with our Fresh Start Team and we are hoping to have a Masters student work with our Homeless Health Link Service over the summer. In addition, SPEAR recently hosted 2 A-level students from Orleans Park School on a 1 week placement, (you can read the students' reviews of their placements on our website here and here) and we will shortly have another student from Richmond Academy School.

We were delighted to recently receive an award from St Mary's University for 'Outstanding Placement Provider' in recognition of our openness and flexibility in working with their students and of the level of support we offer to them. You can read more about the award and the fantastic review from St Mary's here.
