Starting Practice

During the month of February, we will work with our learn to skate group to prepare them for starting in a race. Skaters will be instructed about the rules of starting and participate in simulated starts that include the use of a starting gun. This experience will help prepare them for future events and work to make them comfortable with the commands, timing and sound that accompany's any race situation.

Jigs, Stones & Sharpening

Maintaining your equipment is part of developing as a speedsktater. It is important to know your equipment and keep them sharp and safe both for you and for others. If your skates haven't been sharpened in a while, and you don't know how to sharpen, now is the time to learn. If the skater is 11 or older, they are ready to begin practicing their sharpening skills. Younger skaters will need parents to learn the trade.

The club has two sharpening jigs and a couple of stones for your use. If you need a lesson or quick review, ask Barb to set aside some time before or after a practice.

Don't hesitate to ask a coach to check your equipment or show you how to check for burs or dull blades.
Old News is Great News.
This photo of our very own Hira Hanson was taken at an October Buffalo Invitational a couple years ago. Hira took first place in his age class and when I ran across this photo, I couldn't help but want to share it with all of you. Hira works hard, has a great sense of humor and is simply a joy to be around. Did I mention he's pretty fast? Hira's hard work has got him breaking into the10s for lap speed. Hira is a Freshman at Cleveland Heights High School, a scholar athlete and plays on the Varsity soccer team. After practice he can be found eating fries, working on his soccer foot skills or watching the Cavaliers.
