March 2020 ~ e-News
President's Letter

Wow, life has changed since last month!  We are now in the midst of stay-at-home orders by our counties in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.   I hope you all are keeping yourselves safe by following CDC guidelines on social distancing so that we can slow the spread and give our medical community the time to prepare supplies, beds, equipment, and treatments to deal with the virus outbreak.  I have been watching the briefings by the President and his task force each day.  I am very proud of President Trump, Vice President Pence, and the task force experts who are working hard to fight this invisible enemy.  I am confident that we will get to the other side of the crisis and experience an economic rebound, and President Trump is the right leader for this moment in history.

We won't be able to meet together in April.  We'll monitor the situation for May, so please watch for announcements.

While most of us are stuck at home, there are actions we can still take to support and help Republicans.  Check out the Political Action section below for details.
Please take care of yourselves and pray for the worldwide community, our leaders, and the healthcare workers on the frontline of the pandemic!

Sincerely,

Carla Birk
2020 President, NWARW

April Meeting - Cancelled
Caring for America - Elaine Lehmann, Chair

The tour of  Brookwood in Georgetown has been cancelled.  We'll re-schedule for another time.

Many of our neighbors and non-profit organizations will be temporarily hurt due to the sudden economic halt due to the pandemic.  We encourage you to reach out to the many non-profit organizations including ones we have supported.
May Elections Postponed

The May 2 municipal elections have been postponed by the counties, and a proclamation by Governor Abbott allows them to be held as late as November 3.  Cedar Park has three city council positions plus the mayor up for election.  Round Rock also has two council members plus the mayor up for election.  The Austin city council elections were previously scheduled for November, so the filing period will open in July.

The Primary Runoff elections scheduled for May have been postponed until July 14.  Governor Abbott also postponed the Special Election for Senate District 14 until July 14.  Early Voting for the elections will begin June 29 under the current schedule.  There are three runoff elections effecting parts of Travis County:  House District 47 between Jennifer Fleck and Justin Berry (pending a recount), State Board of Education District 5 between Lani Popp and Robert Morrow, and Congressional District 17 between Pete Sessions and Renee Swann.
Membership – Ann Bradley, 1st VP Membership

Prayers

Please keep Ann and her family in your prayers.  Her husband Walter is scheduled for surgery on April 6 at MD Anderson in Houston as he battles a new cancer as well as ongoing leukemia.

Legislative Update - Jan Duncan

Due to restrictions on public gatherings, both Travis and Williamson County / SD Conventions were convened and immediately adjourned to a future date.  TCRP will reconvene on May 30 at Great Hills Baptist Church.  WCRP will reconvene at the call of the chair to be posted to the website 7 days prior and emailed to delegates.  The Republican Party of Texas State Convention likewise will be postponed until July 13-18 pending the necessary votes by the party's officials committee to be approved by the SREC.

Two emergency bills have been passed by Congress and signed by President Trump dealing with the corona virus pandemic.  The first at the beginning of March authorized $8.3 billion to combat the virus.  The second bill passed last week and provided free virus testing, expanded sick and family leave, increased unemployment benefits, and food assistance.  On Monday a bi-partisan Senate bill was close to passing, but failed after Speaker Pelosi returned from break with her own version of a bill.  Republicans expressed outrage as the Pelosi bill contained a wish list of progressive agenda items unrelated to the temporary crisis.  After contentious negotiations this week, Congress seems close to a deal on the third bill which at this time is estimated at $2 trillion in economic aid to workers and businesses.
Political Action – Susan Friedrich and Terry Ross, Co-Chairs

Four ways to help Republican candidates and officials while you are at home.

1.  Get trained and make phone calls to voters.  Krysta Walker, Central Texas Field Organizer with the Republican Party of Texas, can get you started.  Email her at  kwalker@texasgop.org.  Also Mary Heffernan can get you started to call ten Republicans who need to register to vote or update their registrations as part of the RPT's 10K for 10R program.  Email Mary at mpheffernan837@yahoo.com.

2.  Print, sign, and send the official petition to reinstate the camping ban in public areas in Austin and to prohibit panhandling 7PM-7AM.  The petition will put the issues on the ballot in the November election if 20,000 signatures by Austin voters are collected by July.  Download the form here:  https://documentcloud.adobe.com/link/track?uri=urn%3Aaaid%3Ascds%3AUS%3Ac4ee06f1-dda4-49fb-b7c5-25bda282a397

3.  Stay in touch with your elected officials to tell them when you support them or what actions you want them to take or not take.  Hearing from voters does make a difference.
