Heading Back to School with LGBTQ Competency

Garry Bevel, children’s ombudsperson at the Children's Home Society of Florida and an All Children - All Families master trainer, chatted with HRC this month as part of our Back to School campaign. Bevel discussed his commitment to creating supportive environments for LGBTQ young people and a new CDC report on how crucial that work is. New Resource: Family First Prevention Services Act & LGBTQ Youth Health & Well-being
Advancing Healthy Outcomes: Eight Ways to Promote the Health and Well-Being of LGBTQ+ Youth Involved with Child Welfare through FFPSA,” a new brief from the Center for the Study of Social Policy, outlines how child welfare systems can implement eight strategies to address existing disproportionalities and disparities for LGBTQ+ children, youth, and families, promote optimal well-being, and recognize and affirm the multidimensional identities of youth and families including race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, and immigration status.

One Mother’s Firsthand Account of the Importance of Family Acceptance

Kerri Williams, a mental health and adoption advocate in North Carolina, makes a powerful case for why child welfare agencies must provide adoptive parents with resources on supporting LGBTQ young people. She explains, “Coming out can be a scary moment for any young person, but even more so for adopted kids. By coming out, they risk losing their tenuous, budding relationships with new family members.
