Creative Fuel Challenge #24
Catch the Shadows
A few weeks ago on Creative Fuel Challenge, Julie Hotz shared her thoughts on finding beauty in the everyday, particularly through the lens of a camera. Since then I have been thinking a lot about shadows, and even making more time than usual to seek them out. I am still on the hunt for a perfect fern-on-fern shadow, will be sure to let you know when I find it.
Today we are going to seek out that light play as well, but with pen and paper. We are going to draw shadows.
There are a couple of ways of going about this activity (and I am sure that there are more—remember, these prompts are more to encourage creative thinking and action, so you are encouraged to do them as you see fit).
1. Trace a shadow
Find a shadow, and place your paper so that it's right under the shadow. Then trace. You may need to make some adjustments with your paper depending on if it's a cloudy day and the sun is feeling indecisive. To get a clear shadow, you might need to prop the paper up or hold it at an angle. It's an adventure! You can even add to your traced shadow later. It might be asking for a little color, or maybe it wants to be turned into something else entirely.
2. Draw a shadow
Find an object with a shadow. Or find a good source of light in your house and place an object down to create a shadow. Instead of focusing on the object, draw the shadow instead. How does focusing on the shadow challenge you to rethink how you see the object?
As with so many of these prompts, just remember that this is an act of seeing and an act of presence.
A few minutes to focus on a shadow and nothing else.
A few minutes when the rest of the world goes on pause and all your concentration is on the page.
