Creative Fuel Challenge #35
Simple, Everyday Objects

Inspiration doesn't come to us, we have to seek it out. We have to welcome it in.

How far do we have to go for inspiration? I think that what we view as having potential for inspiration is mostly a state of mind. It's easy to play the "if only" inspiration game: if only I could go somewhere new, if only I had time, if only I didn't have to do the laundry, if only, if only...

Our creative lives will be consumed by "if onlys" if we don't sit down diligently and do the work even when we feel the furthest from inspired.

Remember way back when we focused on everyday delights? Today is a slightly rendition of that, a challenge to rethink the objects in our closest surroundings.

  • Pen and/or pencil
  • Paper
  • Watercolors, markers, etc.
First off, find an object or two. You might gravitate to something colorful, something with an interesting line, or even a favorite mug or book. But I would also challenge you to grab something that feels a bit "blah" and uninspiring too. Maybe a sponge or that piece of crumpled paper you just pulled off the floor?

Prompt #1: Draw the object
I prefer blind contour drawing for this, only because doing so allows me to release any expectation about what the end result will be. I assure you that if you are craving inspiration, part of getting there is getting rid of expectations about what you are going to make.

Prompt #2: Write about the object
Up to you how you want to write. Time yourself for a few minutes and do a free-write about the object. Or write a poem admiration for the object in front of you. A short story about it? Or even a haiku.

If you really need a change of scenery, might I suggest @stillherestilllife on Instagram. Every week they post a different picture for you to do a still life from, and if you just need something a little different to get you going, this just might be it.

Onwards to inspiration, wherever you find it.
