Extend Your Growing & Harvest Season Into Fall And Winter
Wherever you garden, from the northeast and high mountain elevations to the mild climate west and the balmier southern states, the spring and summer growing season often seem just too short. Use these tips and techniques to reap the biggest bounty from your garden and stretch extra days and weeks out of your growing and harvesting season.
    September in the Trial Garden

We just harvested some of the ‘Blue Belle,’ ‘Red Sonia’ and ‘Huckleberry Red’ potatoes (not available wholesale) we grew from our seed potato planting. Our seed potatoes produce abundant harvests without taking up too much garden space. Home grown potatoes are such a flavor treat, and you get the opportunity to grow unusual varieties that you would not find at the supermarket.
Renee’s Mini Pepper ‘Baby Belles’ are favorite snacks for everybody who works in our in our office and trial garden and we always grow them just for everyone to enjoy. These compact plants are extremely productive and load up early with, sweet, crisp fruits. This season, I filled some with ground turkey and savory herb stuffing and roasted them for appetizers.
We dedicated an entire fence line to ornamental gourds to compare our ‘Wings and Warts’ to other varieties. We are happy that we still found Renee’s to be our favorite! The fast-growing climbers produced a huge quantity of adorable, long lasting ornamental gourds, some warted and some winged. They are awesome for Halloween and in decorative fall displays.
