Council Decides on Summer Worship
The Church Council met Thursday, May 28 via conference call to discuss summer worship in response to the Illinois Department of Health’s Five Phase Reopening Plan and Pastor Reed’s Summer Proposal based off that plan.
Per Pastor Reed’s Proposal to begin Drive-in worship with Holy Communion on the first and third Sunday, the council unanimously passed moving forward in this way for the month of June and July. (June 7, 21; July 5:19). All other Sundays will stay with our current way of virtual worship and radio transmission of the worship in the back parking lot.

Here is what drive-in worship will look like:
  • Pastor Reed will lead worship from the church steps.
  • Virtual (non-communion) worship videos will still be posted every Sunday.
  • If you feel ill, stay at home and partake in virtual worship.
  • Everyone parks near the entrance, stays in their vehicle, and tunes their car radios to 99.1 FM to listen to worship. (Currently the range we can transmit is 32 yards)
  • A person with a mask will come by to hand out non-consecrated elements and receive offering as people park their cars.
  • These elements will be prepared in a sanitary environment and put in brown paper bags. (There will be both grape juice and wine options.)
  • Inside the bag will also be bulletin information for the service.· The person on the driver’s side must wear a mask to receive the elements for  everyone in the car and giving offering. You will not receive elements if you do not follow this rule. (If you need a mask we can provide one.)
  • The person handing out non-consecrate elements will reapply hand sanitizer in between vehicles.
  • Those handing out non-consecrated elements and taking offering will stop and return to their cars at 9:40 am. (If you are late and miss this, you will just have to wait until the next drive-in Holy Communion service.)
  • Following the Words of Institution you may ingest the elements. (If you are in a vehicle with someone then it is best to give communion to each other. If you are alone in your vehicle then you may commune yourself. If you are worried about spilling the blood of Christ in your car then you may wait until you get home to partake in the elements.)
  • Pastor Reed will play recordings of the readers and hymns over his headset to listen and sing along to.
The following have been elected to positions of leadership and trust at Augustana Lutheran Church:

A big thank you to all who helped me celebrate my 80th birthday on Saturday, May 16.  It was great to have the fire department singing “happy birthday;" followed by a car caravan of friends and neighbors waving & honking.  The cards received are very much appreciated.

VBS is not Canceled, Just Different
Augustana Lutheran Church will still be offering some form of Vacation Bible School for all our little ones. If we are still in Phase 3, the VBS experience will be done virtually. If our state has reached Phase 4, we may offer an outdoor family based VBS in the back of the church. More information on what this looks like will be coming out in next month’s newsletter.
The Jenny Lind Chapel will remain closed at least through June 30 because of the coronavirus pandemic.  It is hoped that evening vespers can be held there July 28 and August 30. Large containers on the front steps are still being used as a repository for donated items of non-perishable food & miscellaneous supplies for people unable to go to stores.
We extend our sympathy and prayers to the family of Doris Lindquist. Doris died on May 6. Private graveside services was held at Andover Township cemetery. A celebration of life will be held at a later
Baby Shower for Baby P

Even though our church is apart due to the novel coronavirus, we wanted to throw a drive-by baby shower for Megan and her little-boy-to-be. The shower will consist of people driving by in their cars with a gift in fifteen minute increments so they have time to talk a little bit with the happy family. To RSVP and sign up for a time slot for the baby shower please call Emily Johnson at 309-912-5720
Augustana Lutheran is excited to have two high school graduates this year: John Foley and Brooke Norberg.  Due to the global pandemic, their senior year was abruptly cut short and the end of the school year festivities and in person graduations were all cancelled.  Never the less, the class of 2020 is determined and persistent and even without all the typical graduation fanfare, our graduates will go out into the world with courage and perseverance to make a difference in this world.
John Foley will attend Scott Community College majoring in Diesel Technology.
Brooke Norberg is furthering her education at Black Hawk College this summer toward a degree in nursing and then continuing on to be a nurse practitioner.
Remember these young people in your prayers!

Giving is an act of love, and an act of Faith in a Generous God
