Three Years of Ministry
and a Baby on the Way

I have heard from many parishioners that they are saddened they have not been able to see my wife, Megan, through her pregnancy. We, too, have been saddened to not be able to share this experience with family, friends, and the good people of Augustana. Just three years ago Megan was writing a newsletter article to introduce herself. I also wrote a greeting. And then on July 2nd, 2017, we officially began ministry and worship together.

Three years of ministry is not long considering our church was founded in 1850. Three years of ministry definitely has seemed to go fast. It has had its ups and downs, but I mostly recall many ups and not so many down moments as your pastor. I am in a weird phase after three years of ministry where I feel like I have come to know the good people of Augustana Lutheran Church, but at the same time I look forward to all the more I still have yet to learn about your faiths, lives, and witness to Jesus.

Speaking of three years, that is the length of Jesus’ ministry on earth before he was crucified and resurrected for us…for our sake. In saying this I do not wish to equate myself to Jesus, but rather I wish to remind all of us why we are doing this whole thing in the first place. We have made an impact in each other’s lives and in the lives of people in our community over these three years. We do this because of the most important three year ministry that has happened for humanity. Jesus’ life, ministry, death and resurrection have taught us everything we need to know about how we are loved. Jesus taught us to share that love with the whole world, especially those who need it most.

Going forward into the years to come I believe things at Augustana Lutheran Church are going to be different. Most noticeably in the fact that Megan and I will be welcoming our first child into the world this summer. This little boy is not just going to be our son. He is also going to be baptized and become a member of our congregation. He is going to grow up with your love, faith, and support. This is a big deal!
This also means that juggling family, health, and call will be a little different. Before our child, Megan and I could work longer hours. We just needed to make sure that our dog was fed and able to go to the bathroom. Now we will have a human life to take care of. I ask for patience as Megan and I figure out being a parent (especially amidst a pandemic) while also still working. I look forward to watching our little man grow up in this congregation.

Three years of ministry has been wonderful. Now with a baby on the way I believe it will only be that much better. God’s blessing to each of you. Take care, stay healthy, and keep up the vision for our church, “Proclaiming the Gospel, Growing in Faith, Ministering to All”.
Liturgical Nerd Notes –
Worship Through July and August

There are too big things to cover for this article:
             1) Paternity Leave and how we will worship.
             2) Worshiping outdoors in phase 4.
1) I have created four weeks of worship videos following the liturgy of “The Season of Creation”. These will be our worship services during my parental leave. Megan is due on August 4th. These worship videos will begin Sunday, August 2nd at the latest. They will begin sooner if Megan goes into labor sooner. Pastor Mike Clark, Assistant to the Bishop for the West Conference, has offered to be on call for four weeks so that I can take parental leave. He will start at the end of July at the latest. Again, he may start sooner if our child is born sooner. Worship will only be virtual for these four weeks. In person worship will be suspended. I ask for patience and prayers for good health for our little one.
2) Outside of that four week liturgy, we will continue to have in person outdoor Holy Communion Worship on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of the month. Illinois is in stage 4 of the “Restore Illinois” plan.
  • That means people may sit in lawn chairs outside.
  • We will keep the front parking reserved for those who wish to stay in their vehicles and tune in on 99.1 FM.
  • Those who wish to sit outside are asked to wear masks for worship and maintain at least six feet between other families.
  • If wearing a mask is truly infringing on your ability to worship, then please stay in your vehicle or try to maintain twelve to fifteen feet between other people.
  • On these Sundays worship will be live-streamed for all of those watching online. This means that worship begins at 9:30 am Central Time for everyone. A link will be provided on our Facebook Page and church website.
  • I will also post the recording of worship afterwards.
Please note: Decisions on how we worship in September will be made by the council in the next two months. Feel free to contact any of them to express comments, concerns, and direction for what you would like to see for worship

Wow! Our hearts are so full! Thank you so much for those who sent gifts and who participated in the drive by baby shower. We are so blessed by all of you and we can’t wait for you all to meet Baby P (virtually and in person). Thank you to the wonderful ladies who helped make all of this possible! This definitely wasn’t what all of us had in mind originally but we couldn’t have asked for a better day!

Dear Augustana Good Samaritan Fund ~
Words alone cannot express how truly blessed we feel to be part of such a caring, supporting community. (Bear one another’s burdens, and so  fulfill the law of ChristGalatians 6:2)
You gave from your heart without the expectation of getting anything back. The words “Thank You” do not feel enough. Josh continues to heal every day by day and most days find him in great spirits. We are adding a room onto our home for him and have made everything on the main floor handicap accessible.
He just had another surgery. Hopefully in time and with the assist of a brace he will be able to walk again. The prayer are what has kept us going, life doesn’t always turn out as planned and that’s alright -  have to have faith and hope. We continue to praise God for what he has done for us and for putting good people in our lives.
Many blessings,
The Dobbels
   Chris, Jenny and Josh
