Parish Nurse Minute
As pretty as new-fallen snow appears, shoveling sidewalks and driveways can be troublesome for your heart. The combination of shoveling and cold weather can cause your arteries to spasm and constrict. Emergency departments see more heart attacks in the winter months when people are exposed to cold weather and do strenuous activities like shoveling snow. The risk is even greater if you have heart conditions already.
People often think they are in good shape and tend to overdo it. If, while shoveling snow, you experience chest pain or discomfort; Shortness of breath; Pain or discomfort in the jaw, neck, back, arm, or shoulder; Feeling nauseous, light-headed, or unusually tired, call 911.
