Postdoctoral Fellowship in Children’s Environmental Health, Research Translation and Environmental Justice, University of Southern California

The University of Southern California (USC), founded in 1880, is the largest private employer in the City of Los Angeles. As an employee of USC, you will be a part of a world-class research university and a member of the “Trojan Family,” comprised of faculty, students, staff and urban Los Angeles that make the university what it is. The Division of Environmental Health in the Department of Population and Public Health Sciences at the Keck School of Medicine, has an international reputation as a hub of world-class NIH-supported environmental health centers. These include the Southern California Children’s Environmental Health Research Translation Center, Southern California Environmental Health Sciences Center, the Maternal and Developmental Risks from Environmental and Social Stressors Center, the USC Center for Translational Research on Environmental Health, and an Environmental Influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) award, the Life Course Approach to Developmental Repercussions of Environmental Agents on Metabolic and Respiratory Health.

The Children’s Center invites applications for an innovative post-doctoral research associate position to develop cutting-edge population translational research and community engagement on children’s environmental health (CEH). The Center has as a theme “Imagine a Los Angeles without fossil fuels” and a focus broadly on effects of climate changing emissions and air pollution from the largest port complex in North America, oil drilling, smelters, refineries and other industrial sources in densely populated urban areas. The scope of work will involve development of skills in: assessments of health co-benefits of alternative policy and interventions, in collaboration with environmental justice communities; research and service-oriented community engagement; and providing expert testimony in policy forums, to city, regional and national regulatory agencies. Writing policy briefs, commentaries and position papers provide opportunities for high impact, policy-relevant publications. Opportunities exist to develop communication tools such as infographics and short videos on topics in CEH translation and skills for interacting with the press and social media. The Center supports a CEH community based participatory research portfolio of awards that offer additional opportunities for skills development and papers.

As a member of the postdoctoral community at USC, fellows will have the opportunity for advanced multidisciplinary training through coursework in any of the Department’s graduate programs including Epidemiology and Biostatistics, and at other departments and schools represented by Center investigators across the university. There is a robust career development program offering training through meetings, seminars and workshops hosted by the environmental health Centers and across USC. The program helps early investigators develop essential skills for an independent research career or work in policy, nongovernmental or community organizations. Mentorship and guidance exist to assist fellows in grant and manuscript writing, scientific presentation, collaboration with multidisciplinary teams and to develop skills in community engagement.

A PhD in environmental epidemiology or a related quantitative skill set is important for success in this position. However, this is a highly interdisciplinary center with investigators spanning broadly environmental health sciences, communications, psychology, dramatic arts and cinema, urban planning, sociology and journalism; broad skills are valued. A demonstrated interest in community engagement or children’s environmental health and intermediate or advanced skills with at least one statistical software, e.g., SAS, R, Stata, etc, are required. Interested candidates should submit a letter outlining research and training objectives, CV, and reprints of any relevant publications. Address applications to Dr. Rob McConnell at rmcconne@usc.edu. The position is funded by the Children’s Center and non-federal funds.
