EVTA NEWS for councillors

April 2017

Dear friends,
Welcome to our April Newsletter, welcome to the spring and we look forward with great anticipation to the events of the summer in the singing world.

Sadly we have just heard the news that we were not successful with our bid for funding from Creative Europe, obviously we are very disappointed as we had hoped to be more financially supportive of our members but we shall continue to do what we do and rely on goodwill and volunteers as we are so fortunate to be able to do. The whole process was time consuming but in fact very useful for focussing our minds on the important work we need to do and we shall learn from all their feedback which was generally very positive. Out of the 64 applicants only 28 received funding! We are still committed to supporting the Singing Roadshows and we are going to be presenting papers on our plans in upcoming events and at the first Singing Roadshow which will take place in Paris in October in parallel with AFPC-EVTA France’s annual congress.
Check out the news items below!  We are also including some of your congresses and meetings to help spread the word about all the great things our members do for Singing Teaching and Voice. Please let me know what your association is doing so we can promote your activities as well. Communication and marketing is an area which we need to improve on and we need your help!
Please pass on this newsletter to your own members as we can only ‘spread the word’ if you press ‘send’ when you receive this!
And if you have not replied to Christa’s request for updated information and fees please do so as soon as possible: we need your participation in order to function.
With best wishes,
Susan Yarnall-Monks President EVTA

COUNCIL MEETING and ICVT 2-6 Aug, 2017

International Congress of Voice Teachers, Stockholm, Sweden

Good news!  The early bird deadline of the International Congress of Voice Teachers (ICVT)  has been extended to the middle of April and the programme is looking very exciting!

Council will take place on Tuesday 1st August 2017 in Stockholm with an evening meal before the main ICVT event begins. You will hear more about the  Council agenda, minutes, evening meal etc. in the middle of May.

Our Young Professionals Programme (YPP) that takes place during ICVT is up and running. We are thrilled to have 12 talented singers for the international congress this year!  There are 3 singers from Sweden, 2 from Norway, 2 from Finland, 2 from Switzerland, and 1 each from France, Italy and the Netherlands.

In the last Journal of Singing, NATS president Linda J. Snyder shared some beautiful thoughts on the importance of international cooperation. It underlines that EVTA is part of an international network that goes beyond Europe!

"As voice teachers our world is constantly expanding. Let us take this time to reflect on our own globally enriching experiences and share our voices and these experiences with our students. Let us continue to find ways to share our unique voices with one another and with those across the continents, and to build new relationships. May we listen and grow together."

PEVOC12, 30 Aug -1 Sept, 2017

Pan-European Voice Conference, Ghent, Belgium

The twelfth Pan-European Voice Conference (PEVOC12) wants to cherish cross-fertilizing worlds and strives to create a lively discussion forum in which experts of diverse fields share their experience and knowledge. Evta will also take part. You can take advantage of the early bird rate for the PEVOC12 in Ghent till May 5th.

EUROVOX 30 Aug - 2 Sept, 2018

European Congress of Voice Teachers, The Hague, The Netherlands

Save the Date!
The organising committee for Eurovox 2018 is now inviting speakers, workshop leaders and presenters from all disciplines that work with voice.

All elements in the congress such as master classes, workshops and presentations will be focussed around the central theme VOCAL FUSION:  cooperation in the broadest sense of the word, as in singers who are members of a choir, who work in musical theatre, how to work with a director, how to obtain the specific skills necessary to work with a pianist or band, with a conductor, with a teacher… The central question is: ‘what does this mean for a singer’s education and how can voice teachers and other voice professionals incorporate this cooperation in their practice?’.

We are interested in your ideas and welcome your suggestions for Eurovox 2018. If you know of people who fit in with the congress theme please send an email to Christa Bornhijm,

On March 3rd and 4th, Claudia Phillips represented EVTA by attending an international meeting organised by the European Music Council (EMC) and hosted by PlateForme Interrégionnale in Paris.  The purpose of the meeting was to work on a European Agenda for Music.
EVTA is indeed becoming more and more involved in the European music scene!
World Voice Day 2017, April 16
This year’s theme is Share Your Voice.  Let us know if you are doing anything to celebrate World Voice Day. EVTA has put ten tips for healthy singing on our website which you can download for free and give to your students!

Eleanor Forbes from BDG has told us about the next BDG Congress in Freiburg from 28-30 April 2017 with an exciting programme, including a visit of the Institut für Musikermedizin with its state of the art equipment (MRI scanner, etc). They would welcome delegates from outside Germany! There is also a DVD coming out from BDG on the voice, available at their congress, details to follow.

Elizabeth Aubry invites you all to AICI’s two-day congress 20-21 May 2017, oriented towards body/voice (day 1) and choral pedagogy (day 2). Marvin Keenze is the featured international speaker!

Martin Vácha has told us of the next Austrian Association Congress entitled ‘Adventure BELCANTO’, 24 June 2017, University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna

AOTOS Conference 21 July- 23 July 2017, Wills Hall, Bristol UK
“Action and Interaction” More information and full conference programme at

The AFPC-EVTA France conference will take place in Boulogne-Billancourt, France from 21-24 October 2017 and will be in parallel with the first Singing Roadshow.  It is also the 30th year anniversary of the association!  More information will follow but keep the date free!

Next year we hope to work with Europa Cantat at their choral festival on 27 July-5 August 2018 in Tallinn, Estonia. It is a great opportunity to work with thousands of singers and we really do want to extend our membership to countries with great singing traditions, so please let us know if you have colleagues wanting to start a Singing Teachers Association in countries not yet in EVTA.
