Words from Our Teachers

Dear Parents,

April was a month full of fun and exploration. We learned about various types of birds and the uniqueness of their eggs and beaks. In our Ocean theme, we learned about the geography of the sea, ocean zones, where fresh and saltwater meet and the various creatures living in it. We learned about the physiology of these animals and their way of life. By this we've strengthened our vocabulary in both English and Chinese by using teaching aids, manipulatives, pictures, etc. based on our theme of study. In addition, the students used various Chinese character cards prepared by the teacher to help recognize, describe and enhance their writing skills. We were also able to role play the story of The Horse Crossed the River.

On April 15th, we celebrated our Easter party internally with a special stories and treats. The children happily participated in the Easter egg hunt and craft activities. April 22nd was Earth Day. We learned and discussed the importance of protecting the earth, as well as the 3R’s (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) such as: saving energy, not wasting paper, water, electricity, food, etc.; garbage sorting and recycling; caring for plants, etc. Through a lot of practice, we believe the children have been deeply impressed by this. Everyone said, “The protection of the earth must start with me, starting from the little things I do every day.”

We continue strengthening our phonemic awareness and enhancing both our vocabulary and sight words. Besides mastering short/long vowel sounds and writing lowercase letters, we also acknowledged syllables within our themed vocabulary. Aside from reviewing basic operations, plotting data and telling time, we also learned how to skip-count by 5’s and 10’s and use tally marks to display data. For science, we experimented on mixing both the fresh and saltwater to see if they will mix or just meet. We also recreated the 5 ocean zones in a jar (the Sunlight, Twilight, Midnight, Abyss and Trench zones).

The students showed great interest as we started "Show and Tell" where each can briefly share to
Victor Class the items they brought. We all look forward to it every week. In May, we will learn all about the Human Body.

We would also like to express our gratitude to all of you for making time out of your busy schedule to meet with us for the Parent-Teacher Conferences. It was a pleasure meeting with you all. Everyday is an opportunity for us to learn new things about and with them. There is never a dull moment in the Victor classroom.

All the Best,

Ms. Julia & Ms. Lindsay
