SCSC Welcomes New Commissioner

The SCSC welcomed a new commissioner in January with the appointment of Ms. Clara Keith. Commissioner Keith was nominated by Governor Deal to fill the vacancy created by Commissioner Suzanne Werner's voluntary departure from the board. Commissioner Keith currently works with the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities and has extensive experience working in schools and at the Georgia Department of Education in various leadership roles. In addition to Commissioner Keith's appointment, Commissioners Tom Lewis and Jose Perez were renominated by the Lieutenant Governor and Speaker of the House, respectively, and confirmed by the State Board of Education at the January meeting. 2017 SCSC Petition Timeline

The 2017 SCSC Petition Application is tentatively scheduled for release in late January, pending approval from the Commission.

Governance Training Requirement

Georgia law, O.C.G.A. § 20‐2‐2084(f), requires that every member of a governing board of a state charter school participate in annual governing board training. The SCSC offers two opportunities for state charter school board members to receive this training through the SCSC free of charge.* The remaining 2016-17 SCSC governance training session will be offered on the following dates.

*State Travel Policy applies. Individuals are responsible for arranging their own overnight accommodations.
 
Meetings will start at noon on February 7th and end at 5 p.m. on February 8th. Board members who do not wish to participate in SCSC training may seek alternate training through a list of approved providers. Information about alternate training is available in the Frequently Asked Questions guide below.

New School Orientation
Target Audience: Newly Approved State Charter Schools
January 26, 2017, Marriott Marquis, Atlanta

Register
This training is required for newly approved state charter school boards and leaders. SCSC staff and other presenters will share critical information on data reporting, finances, human resources, Title programs, special education requirements, the Teacher and Leader Keys Effectiveness Systems (TKES/LKES), and student recruitment and marketing strategies, among other topics.

Budgeting and Writing Financial Policies

The Carl Vinson Institute of Government Charter Schools Financial Management Certification equips participants with the unique skills and knowledge needed to financially operate a charter school. The Budgeting course will focus on roles of the board and staff in budgeting, budget preparation process, estimating revenues and expenditures, projection of ending fund balance, and justification of budget to funding authorities and board. Budget administration, long term financial planning, and the Quality Basic Education funding formula will also be discussed. The Writing Financial Policies course will focus on the policies important to charter schools including Accounting and Financial Reporting, Budget, Revenue, Expenditures, Fund Balance, Capital Asset, Cash and Investments, and Purchasing.

GaDOE District Accountability Contact

To ensure that communication regarding CCRPI activities and applications is seamless, last year the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE) asked that each school district designate an individual as the Accountability Point of Contact. GaDOE will continue to send official notifications to Superintendents and will send more regular communications and reminders to the Accountability Point of Contacts via emails, webinars, and lunch-and-learns.

GaDOE U.S. Department of Education Charter School Program Grant
The State Board of Education formally accepted the U.S. Department of Education award at its November 2016 meeting. Once USED approves the sub-grant application form and other items, GaDOE will begin the sub-grant award application process, most likely in early 2017. Taking Responsibility for Your Financial Statements Webinar Series
Carl Vinson Institute of Government

The Carl Vinson Institute of Government (CVIOG) will offer a series of three, one-hour webinars to explain the importance of internal control over financial reporting, identify auditor and auditee responsibilities of an audit engagement, and discuss how to use the Georgia Department of Audits and Accounts checklist as a control tool when preparing financial statements. Second Step and Child Protection Unit Curriculum Opportunity
Georgia Department of Family and Children Services 

The Georgia Department of Child and Family Services (DFCS) is seeking public and private school Pre-K through 8th grade applicants to implement the Second Step and Child Protection Unit Curriculum.This program is a universal, classroom-based curriculum designed to promote children’s social and academic success by decreasing problem behaviors, increasing students’ school success, and promoting social-emotional competence and self-regulation. Organized by grade level, the program teaches children empathy, problem-solving skills, risk assessment, decision-making, and goal-setting skills. The deadline to apply is February 10, 2017 and the program must be implemented by September 11, 2017. Contact Laura Griggs with questions.

2017 Job Fair

2017 Georgia Charter Schools Conference
Georgia Charter Schools Association 

Registration is open for the 2017 GCSA conference, which will be held at the Renaissance Atlanta Waverly Hotel & Convention Center from Tuesday, March 14 through Wednesday, March 15. The conference allows all the charter community an opportunity to connect and share best practices. Conference sessions will focus on best practices, professional development strategies, and Georgia’s focus on quality charter schools leading to high student achievement. Register here.

Anti-Bullying Summit
Auburn University’s 7th International Anti-Bullying Summit will be held in Peachtree City, GA on June 21-22, 2017. Last year the conference attracted attendance from 14 states as well as Canada and Singapore. To attend, please visit:

Get Georgia Reading Campaign
This campaign is geared toward getting all of Georgia’s children on a path to third grade reading proficiency by 2020. The campaign unites public and private partners to pursue language, literacy, development, and sustainability to reach this goal. Get involved or read more about the initiative here.

The State Charter Schools Commission of Georgia (SCSC) is a state-level, independent charter school authorizing entity. The SCSC has the power to approve or deny petitions for state charter schools and renew, nonrenew, or terminate state charter school contracts in accordance with Georgia law.

The last monthly State Charter Schools Commission meeting was held on December 21, 2016.  The December meeting minutes are available here. The next SCSC meeting is scheduled for January 25, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. in the State Charter Schools Commission office at 205 Jesse Hill Jr. Dr., SE, Suite 1470B, Atlanta, GA 30334.
