Sacramento’s first woman police chief is making history. Here’s how she can make us safer

The city of Sacramento will have its first woman police chief in 27-year veteran Kathy Lester, a historic appointment worth celebrating. Lester succeeds the first Black chief in city history, Daniel Hahn, who ran Sacramento’s more-than-century-old Police Department for four turbulent years marked by civil unrest.

City of Sacramento: Here's your chance to provide input on the final redistricting map

Following six hours of public comment and tediously drawing lines with digital mapping software, Sacramento’s Independent Redistricting Commission finalized a map Wednesday night that will set City Council boundaries for the next decade. The new map is available to the public to view and comment on until Dec. 16.

Here's how to learn about a proposed ballot measure to fund repairs, improvements to the City's stormwater system 

The City of Sacramento’s Department of Utilities beginning this month will host a series of webinars on the “Water Pollution and Flood Prevention Measure,” a property-owner ballot measure being proposed in early 2022 to fund repairs and improvements to the City’s aging stormwater system. Residents are invited to attend the webinars to learn more about the measure and how the stormwater system helps protect homes, businesses, local rivers and water sources.

Free Holiday Parking

The City of Sacramento now offers free parking meter operating hours in select areas to incentivize residents and visitors to dine, shop and attend events in downtown and midtown. Until Christmas Day, no payment will be required at select on-street meters after 4:30 p.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends within the holiday parking zones. This includes green meter payment machines. Meter screens will reflect when parking is free and when payment is required.

County of Sacramento: final redistricting map adopted

New district lines have been drawn in Sacramento County following the recent 2020 census, input from the community and the county’s redistricting consultant. The Sacramento County Board of Supervisors voted to adopt the Final Supervisorial District Map following three board meetings earlier this year. The process, according to a press release from Sacramento County, happens every decade.

California restaurants tell Congress they need help to stay open

Restaurant reservations remain far below pre-Covid-19 levels. Jobs at food establishments are coming back slowly, if at all. And the money Congress set aside to help them wasn’t nearly enough. Thousands of restaurant owners from around the country pleaded for help Thursday, with the Independent Restaurant Coalition saying they may have to close.

The Small Business Administration programs that have carried many small businesses through the pandemic are winding down, but many small-business owners are still struggling. About 35% of small businesses could not pay their rent in full and on time in November, up 3% since October, according to a survey of 3,454 small businesses by small business network Alignable. It's worse for minority-owned businesses, of which 49% said they could not afford November rent. Additionally, 40% of retailers are also behind on their rent.
