CarpentryCon Special Report
Warm. Open. Diverse. Welcoming. Inspiring.
Those words go some way towards summing up the three fantastic days of keynotes, lightning talks, skill-ups, break-out discussions, workshops, and networking that comprised the first-ever CarpentryCon. This event drew an audience of more than 110 people from right round the globe.
The Carpentries are eternally grateful to our leading sponsor, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, our two supporting sponsors, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and Mozilla, and the other sponsors who came on board to support the conference and to provide gifts and travel support. The hashtag for CarpentryCon was #CarpentryCon2018, and the special Twitter handle for the event was @CarpentryCon. See Bérénice Batut’s fantastic pictures from the event. If you missed out on a CarpentryCon T-shirt, you can now buy one and get other CarpentryCon swag, including mugs. Read more.
To show our sponsors what great outcomes their funding supported at CarpentryCon, we need to report back, which is where your feedback is so important. Please give feedback on sessions on Day One (Wednesday), sessions on Day Two (Thursday), and on the Friday workshops. This will also give useful information to the CarpentryCon Task Force on what worked well and what might need some fine-tuning for next time.
New Trainer Coordinators
We give a warm welcome to Caroline F. Ajilogba from South Africa (at left) and Jessica Upani from Namibia who are now jointly coordinating The Carpentries’ Trainers group. Trainers certify new instructors and collaboratively develop the instructor training curriculum. They also host demo teaching sessions for instructor checkout. The Trainers have their own Slack channel and meet monthly to discuss issues.
The Carpentries is a community organisation, and we want to hear from our community. To help develop Mission and Vision for The Carpentries, the staff and The Executive Council are embarking on a virtual listening tour. Starting at CarpentryCon 2018 and running until June 14, 2018, we’ll ask our community some short questions on four themes - Learning, Growth, Community, and Gratitude. You can respond by tweeting to us or, if you prefer to be anonymous, you can answer through a survey. Every few days, we’ll post a new question, and ask for your responses. We want to hear from everyone! It doesn’t matter if you’ve taught a ton of workshops or if you’re just hearing about The Carpentries for the first time, we want you to know that You Belong in The Carpentries! Tweet to @thecarpentries using the hashtag #CarpentriesListens, or fill out the anonymous form. Read more.
