LADIES SECTION MID YEAR NEWSLETTER - 2021
April started with gusto playing for the PATTERSON CUP (winner Angela Trollip) and the EASTER SHIELD (winner Margie Siegers), these 2 trophies were played for either side of a very successful staging of our 2021 OPEN.
We had 72 players, welcoming 37 visitors. The day dawned very misty but cleared soon afterwards allowing our beautiful Royal Port Alfred Golf course to show off its uniqueness. From the green fairways, the slick greens, the abundant game and pleasant weather, we were very proud of our club……thank you everyone for the hard work put in making this possible.
No sooner had we recovered from the OPEN and the ladies were hard at work helping at the 2021 MAD HATTER week of fun. Apart from Shirley Heny making sure the ladies were playing as often as possible during the week, we had the regular stalwarts who continue to give of their time selflessly: turning up to sell raffle tickets, fill ‘goodie’ bags, man the Hospice table and (in some cases) be part of the registration team……it would be good to see some new faces doing these time consuming jobs.
Before we knew it, May was upon us…. meaning CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP month, once again these were staged over a weekend playing ahead of the men on both Saturday and Sunday, the weather came to the party and was glorious and talking of parties a very good one was had by all who waited around for the combined prize giving late Sunday afternoon.
Well done to CHANTE van ZYL and MEEKAH de SOUSA our 2021 champions…..great to see our youth shining so brightly.
Trish Barwick and Sonia Reynolds won the RUTH KELLY CUP Better Ball Stableford played the first week in May, great golf girls!
Beginning of June the club welcomed new caterers, with our first medal fixture of the month being rained off, the ladies all stayed to sample BRAM’S delicious soup and a huge ‘thumbs up’ was given to him and his staff…….good to have you on board Bram.
10 of our Royal Port Alfred ladies went to the Katberg over the weekend of 12/13th June, their Ladies Open being played for on the Saturday and a ‘TOWN (East London) vs COUNTRY(Port Alfred)’ competition on the Sunday. It is great to see our club colours being shown off in the surrounding areas, thanks girls!!
Congratulations to Trish Barwick on winning the SETTLERS CUP on 15th June in glorious conditions.
We have introduced a new competition to our calendar…..the over 65s vs the under 65s, (thanks Trish) what a fantastic day was had by 35 players……. great camaraderie, competitiveness, cheer and bit fair bit of cheekiness was the order of the day.
Sunday 27th June we played the 2nd MIXED competition of 2021, wonderful weather to go with the GREEK theme……..winners were Lynnette Harbrecht, Prue Peacock, Kevin Maree and Roger Acton who made good use of their ZORBAs (extra 3/4 pointers) to take home the CONTINENTAL RESTAURANT 1st prize vouchers. Once again, thanks to O’NEIL’S INSURANCE for sponsoring the NTP prizes. Many thanks to these sponsors who’s contribution helps us ‘put the cherry on top’ of a super day’s golf by enabling the section to offer great prizes.
As we get ready to play our final Tuesday of golf in June, we head into the uncertain times of serious Lockdown once again, let’s all do our part by being responsible for our behaviour.
Congratulations to Jenny Ralph on winning the ATHERSTONE CUP, Bonus Bogey is not the easiest competition to come out on top…….(lovely to have you and John as ‘permanents’ in the area Jenny).
It is with great sadness and disbelief that we heard of the passing of Helen Lockyear, one of our Port Alfred stalwart golfers on 30th June, RIP Helen.
Tribute to Helen Lockyear
Hey there Helen
What a stalwart & great competitor we have lost
And we are still counting the cost
You were a true lover of the game
Tuesday afternoons will just never be the same
You left us forever far too soon
The 30th of June will always be dear to our hearts
As we endeavor to make a fresh start
We will remember your enthusiastic cries when the ball lipped the cup
As you gave it your all in never giving up
But most of all we will remember your league achievements, loyalty to the Club & all your love & compassion for your family & friends
Right up until the end
An inspirational English Teacher and Shakespeare specialist of note
Who never rocked the boat
When we raise a glass of Windhoek Draft
We will remember your laugh
You will always be on our mind.
As we all know You were truly one of a kind.
Rest in Peace special golfer & sweet friend
