Smithsonian Learning Lab Bright Ideas Newsletter

Dear Learning Lab Registered User,

Are you spending time outdoors with children this summer? If so, Smithsonian Learning Lab has a new collection format called “Talk with Me Toolkits” containing resources and activities for adults to do together with young children. Designed to build literacy skills and vocabulary, each online “kit” includes the following:

  • Images and videos for making close observations
  • Prompts for adult/child conversations
  • Activities to reinforce and expand each theme
  • Books (all widely available in public libraries)

We created these collections together with Smithsonian early childhood specialists. In upcoming issues of Bright Ideas, we will feature more early childhood collections on such topics as visiting museums with children, exploring art, and the fundamentals of flight.

If you enjoy these new collections, we’d love to hear from you. Send us a note at We hope you are enjoying the summer.
