Help animals by sponsoring an area of our Athabasca Second-Chance Country Refuge facility
To recognize the significance of our main intake facility, we decided to give it an official name and seek sponsorships. Introducing the SCARS Athabasca Second-Chance Country Refuge. Our facility houses sanctuary and foster animals (many with special needs) and serves as a temporary stop for many of the intakes on their way to foster homes. This picture-perfect rural location has heated buildings and a variety of indoor kennels and outdoor runs. It also has acres of walking trails that we use to provide animals with exercise and enrichment. Individuals or businesses can use our new sponsorship program to acknowledge family, friends, special occasions, honour someone's memory, or promote a business. Your sponsorship will support the needs of the many animals currently in our care.
As we near the end of May, our adoptions are at 101 animals (57 cats and 44 dogs) with 91 new animals coming into care (60 cats and 31 dogs). Adoptions are still slow but a bit improved from last month.

Our Spay-Neuter-Return and Walls for Winter Programs
Preventing pet overpopulation is a big part of what we do. SCARS actively works within northern Alberta, partnering with First Nations and Métis communities where there is a lack of accessible and/or affordable pet services. Our Spay-Neuter-Return program helps animals (such as the ones featured in the video below) by providing spaying and neutering, vaccination and micro-chipping for owned pets, and our Walls for Winter program provides those who participate in SNR with an insulated pet shelter. Did you know that we completed 199 spay and neuter returns last year. That equals THOUSANDS of animals saved from unplanned, unwanted litters. Please consider donating to our programs. You can also donate supplies to our Walls for Winter Program by contacting Brenda.Leonard@scarscare.ca.
