What a Month of Rescue Stories!

Without you, we couldn't do what we do. Thank you for helping us grow and change even more lives: dog and human. Our February 2021 intake number is 132 (compared to 73 in February 2020). Our adoptions this month are currently 120 (compared to 105 in February 2020).
Little miss Dabke came into care on February 21st with canine parvo virus. She received urgent care at VCA Canada Guardian Veterinary Centre before being transferred to Westlock Veterinary Centre. She is finally feeling better and has been cleared to transfer to a foster home. Thank you to everyone who has donated directly to her care. ❤️ 🐶

On February 20th, we got a call about an injured dog named Buster (yes another injured Buster!).
When he was picked up, his injuries were clear. Buster had a bad eye and a deep wound on his leg, but it was only once the injuries were cleaned that the extent of his injuries could be seen. Buster had surgery to remove his eye and to repair his front leg. Since then, even more issues were discovered, including a lot of bruising on his abdomen. His care is ongoing.

Thank you to our amazing team for getting Buster into care and to the staff at Westlock Veterinary Center for getting Buster on the road to recovery.

To say Lenore had an eventful weekend would be an understatement. At 10:30 PM on a Saturday night, Lenore went into stage 1 labour. Previous x-rays had indicated she was only going to have one kitten, but it was going to be a big one. So, once she went into labour, her foster parents kept very close eye on her; all night long… and into the next morning. Her fosters contacted Westlock Veterinary Center and it was decided that if there was no baby by noon, she needed to come in. Well that deadline came and went and still no baby, so she was packed up for the hour long drive.

Lenore was prepped for a c-section and after just a few minutes they managed to find her kitten, get him out and get him cleaned up. While under, Lenore was then spayed so she would never have to go through this ordeal again. And after about 45 minutes mom and her baby were reunited.

So please join us in welcoming all 131 grams of ‘heck yeah’; this beautiful kitten named Solo!

We want to thank the wonderful staff of the Westlock Veterinary Center; Brendan, Jake, Reagan, Cassie and Kailee, who came in on their Sunday afternoon off to perform the surgery for Lenore and Solo.

Talk about luck!
Less than 12 hour after she was rescued, our very pregnant Reese, gave birth to eight puppies in the safety of her foster home. 💜💙

Feature Volunteer-Amber Freysteinson

I am a SCARS rescue mom of a pint sized staffy named MJ (who we adopted in July of 2020) and two cats named Evy and Killian (adopted from EHS a few years ago). I have a fiancé named Ben,  and we are getting married this October with however many guests we are legally allowed - ha-ha!

I officially started volunteering for SCARS in November 2020 or least that's when I took on my first active role as a Purdy's Chocolate "pick up location" for our Christmas fundraiser. I recently started helping with our Facebook page(s) as well so you may have already spoken to me and didn't even know it!!

I started volunteering for SCARS because I admire what they do and how they do it to help animals. Whether that's going the extra step to educate communities or sending out warm shelters for the northern outdoor pets when the temperatures get below uncomfortable, even for them. It just warms my heart every time I see a huge animal intake and then all the interest from potential adopters online. I can't wait to see how I can help out SCARS in the future with their meaningful mission to help those who can't ask for it themselves.

Thank you, SCARS! The supporters and my fellow volunteers are the unsung heroes these fur babies need!
