Your support fills our hearts with JOY!

On November 14, we announced we were halting intake and put out a plea for help!

We really have no words to convey how grateful we are to the SCARS community, but we are going to try. Your support, to say the least has been overwhelming. From the bottom of our hearts, from the purrs and wags of the animals in our care – thank you. You have come through for SCARS and our voiceless charges in so many amazing ways. Donations large and small have graciously been sent our way.

🐾 SCARS is now open again for intake and we are over halfway to our $500,000 fundraising goal.
We will use a portion of these funds immediately to care for animals. We are thrilled to announce that we are now able to slowly reopen animal intake. We will start by concentrating on the areas where the situation is critical.

🐾 Fund a Future for our Fur-iends Campaign
Your generosity has also allowed us to create “Fund a Future for our Fur-iends”. Beyond continuing with our operations, we are also putting money aside and working on a plan that ensures we will be saving lives for many years to come.

Our goal is ambitious—$500,000. To date, we are already over half way to that goal. This is all because of you! Your support and love for rescued companion animals has exceeded our dreams. We are confident with your continued help that we can reach this goal so SCARS will always be here to give our furry friends a second chance.

🐾 The impact of COVID-19
The past few months have been intense. The sheer number of homeless and abandoned animals that desperately needed our help was beyond anything we have ever seen. Our foster homes and volunteers are superheroes! A record 583 animals were brought into loving care in two months. Each of these tired souls required veterinary care, and sadly most of them needed treatment over and above regular vetting.

How do you say no to animals whose lives literally depend on you? We could not, until we had to, until there was no choice. With our major fundraisers having to move to a virtual format and not having the same impact, we were facing a potential financial crisis. We had to momentarily take a step back from animal intake and ask ourselves how we can continue to save lives.

We are dedicated to SCARS and its role in saving animals. We want to ensure we will always be here to make a difference. To continue our mission, our only option was to ask you for help. And help you did!

Hey SCARS crew! We all know that one of the safest and healthiest things we can do at this weird time is to walk the dog(s). If you’re walking your dog, you probably take your phone with you. So why not get the ResQwalk app and help raise a bit of cash for SCARS? It’s free, and the Best Friends Animal Society distributes about $1,000 U.S. every month based on the number of miles you walk.

All you have to do is download the app and designate "Second Chance Animal Rescue Society" as the rescue you want to support. When you walk the dog (or anything else) just start a new walk, and your phone will keep track of how far you go. To download the app, go to…

Volunteer Feature: Lori

Hi, I'm Lori. My husband, Troy, and I have volunteered with SCARS since late 2008. Our current pets, Boudica and Gabby are both SCARS dogs, adopted in 2009 and 2013. My current role is Marketing Coordinator. Over the years I have assisted in many areas - from adoption screener to board member, foster mom to fundraiser, and with almost every aspect of communications (writing and editing, social media planning and website updates). Volunteering with SCARS gives back more than I could ever give. I have met so many people I admire and learned a lot about what is possible through teamwork. It has also provided countless opportunities to enhance the skills I use in my day job as a communications professional.

Look at Me Now Update: Layla

Hello SCARS, We adopted Layla on Christmas Eve 2018. We’ve had her almost two years now. Adopting Layla has honestly been the best choice we could have made. She came to us lacking some self confidence and was quite timid, but with lots of love to give. She has gained a lot of confidence and is a great companion. She LOVES to snuggle and thinks she’s a lap dog even though she is 60 lbs. She is smart and loyal, and extremely gentle and patient. She is great with other dogs and loves all people, especially if they will pet her. She is my 8-year-old son’s best friend. We adopted an 8-week-old kitten a month ago. She is so gentle with the kitten, who loves to tease and play with her. We could not have adopted a more awesome dog.
