Making a Difference Every Day

We are so grateful for the amazing volunteers and donors that have helped so many animals get through the terrible winter conditions of the past few months. You gave dogs like Agatha their second chance. We are so pleased that she is now available for adoption as she continues to complete her recovery from demodex.

As of February 25 our numbers were 97 pets coming into care (44 dogs and 53 cats) and 125 adoptions (61 dogs and 64 cats). We also provided 11 spay-neuter-returns.

Special announcement - Throughout March, create a new monthly gift of $20 or more in support of SCARS through CanadaHelps, and CanadaHelps will make a one-time extra $20 donation to our cause!* Click here to donate!

Featured Rescue Stories

We recently shared the success story of Lolita, who came into care in late November with a skin condition. She is now looking so much better thanks to allergy medications and finding her the right food. Turk was a stray who was found on the side of a road with one of his legs hanging by a tendon. We are thankful that a kind person found him and called SCARS. Sara was just another homeless dog that struggled each day to find food and shelter. Now she is a SCARS dog that has a warm bed, food and treats, and is learning what it means to be loved. Batman is a gentle soul that came into care with frostbitten ears and sadness in his eyes. Stevie "the wonder cat" is a senior that came to us desperately needing dental care. Marshmellow had been shot and came into care with a horrible infection. After a successful leg amputation, this sweet, young dog is looking forward to being adopted.

An Amazing Milestone

Congratulations to Pamela on the incredible milestone of fostering 100 SCARS’ dogs as of February 2022!

Not only were 100 lives saved, but countless unwanted litters were prevented through the generous and loving volunteer efforts of Pamela and her family. We asked Pam why she fosters, and this is what she told us…

I began fostering for SCARS in December 2012 after moving into our new house. Originally I wanted to see if a large dog (which my son was begging for) would fit in our busy lifestyle. I am now a SCARS rescue mom of a husky named Iceis who we adopted in August 2013.

One of my first fosters was a burn victim. Witnessing the cruelty that is in this world, as well as the amazingly caring and dedicated volunteers involved in animal rescue, led me to continuing fostering. There are days that fostering can be gut wrenching but it helps knowing that I am part of an organization making a huge impact on animal welfare.

I have now fostered 100 dogs, helping to teach my son and nieces compassion and responsibility. As a family, we love being able to help even more animals find homes where they will be safe and loved. Fostering has been a very rewarding experience and I cannot think of a better way to spend my days than with these animals.

Featured "Look at Me Now" Story

This is Winston. We got him from SCARS five years ago. He was featured on the SCARS’ segment of Global TV Edmonton morning news  one Saturday. When I heard the story they told, I knew that I had to have him. I sent in a request to adopt him that day. We met Winston that Monday and I think he went back for a night to SCARS then came to us.

Since then, he has been a great addition to our family going with us on trips and to my work. He loves his family and the other cats and dogs he lives with. He is so caring and super loyal too. If I don’t say goodbye when I leave the house, he will search high and low for me. He watches for me to come home every day. He loves to move shoes from the front door to somewhere else so you have to search for them. He never damages them. He only hides them so you cannot leave the house. He has been a great addition to our family. - Sean
