Modern Tales is a five month story and professional development initiative created by Bushfire Digital and Script Cube for emerging BAME, female and disabled filmmakers. The programme supports writers, directors and producers in the development of long form dramatic fiction that is both market conscious and creative in its inception, set-up, development and execution. Modern Tales is supported by Creative Skillset’s Film Skills Fund, with BFI’s Film Forever National Lottery funds.

Working Off-Grid Course - Saturday 8 April
The objective of this day-long course is to take storytelling back to its source: the desire to communicate, entertain and give meaning to our desires and actions. By stepping away from technology for the day, each participant will have the chance to examine their project in terms of story, meaning and character and to use game and play techniques to build more constructive relationships with potential collaborators. 

Session One: The Source of Modern Storytelling
We will examine the oral and visual traditions that are the basis of contemporary story construction, making specific reference to Aristotle, oral narratives, and the use of visual media from millennia ago. This is a return to source in order to reflect on our storytelling practices today.

Session Two: Story Premise
The meaning of each story we create can be elusive and very difficult to describe, so how do we ensure we build narratives with solid meaning for the audience? A better understanding of theme and meaning will guide you towards a much stronger grasp of the fundamental principles that get projects made.

Session Three: Collaborative Story Development
Collaboration is key to successful story development. Working in groups and with the support of tutors, we will explore the roles we adopt in the key creative development triangle of writer, director and producer. Through interactive role-play each participant will walk 360 degrees through what it feels like to be any member of this core team.

Sessions Four & Five: Story Playtime
Storytelling is imagination. It is invention. It is play! In groups, each participant will contribute to the creation of a story, characters and world, inventing scenes through improvisation. We will condense a selection of these scenes into flip–books and so realise a story idea in miniature, with a clear premise, world, characters and narrative shape.

Guest speakers include actor, writer, producer & director Beru Tessema, renowned illustrator and flip-book creator, Jean Vincent Senac (tbc).

Research and Development - Saturday 22 April
Unpacking audience behaviour is crucial to understanding what motivates consumers and why. Knowing this, filmmakers can develop their ideas to intersect with consumption patterns and optimise impact. 

In our day-long course on
Research and Development, we will explore how people interact with stories in the digital age by examining current behavioural theory and focussing on our evolving relationship with content. We will look at the changing modes of people’s consumption, exploring lean back (passive consumption) and lean forward (proactive interaction) models of activity.

This workshop will emphasise the importance of understanding audience expectations, behavioural patterns and how filmmakers can connect them with their stories.
