MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Charity Dorrance
Director/ Producer
The Scared List
WIFMCO Treasurer

Q: What is your field of focus?

A: I am a director and writer. Although you will also find me producing and I frequently work as a casting director.

Q: Tell us about your journey thus far in your career? Did you study? If so, where or are you still in school?

A: I started out acting, stage managing, and directing in the theatre. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in theatre, and even though it is still dear to my heart, I’ve always wanted to be a filmmaker, which became more apparent when I went to study “abroad” in LA for a semester of my undergrad. After a long hiatus, I went back to school to study Writing and Directing at the Colorado Film School and am now working at making filmmaking my full-time career.

Q: What was your inspiration to get into this industry? Do you have any mentors you want to mention?

A: I don’t know that it was any one thing that inspired me to go into the industry. I just remember as a kid always being involved in sports and the arts. I loved to watch re-runs of Charlie’s Angels and old movies, and I looked forward to going to the neighborhood movie store and picking out movies for our family movie nights.  I thought, “I could do that, be a storyteller and create shows that bring people together.” Thus began my journey.

I have been fortunate to have some great mentors along the way, who saw something in me and have given me opportunities, built my confidence, and the courage to pursue what some people call, a crazy dream. Shout outs and thank you’s go to: Roseanne Wilkie, Sanne McCarthy, Rick Bernstein, Page Larson, Rob Kramer, Richard Pegg, and Trai Cartwright.  I’m so grateful to all of them!

Q: Tell us about your favorite project you've worked on? Any take-aways?

A: Only one? The one that sticks out the most is a play I directed called The Dixie Swim Club.  It was an all female cast, and a wonderful one at that.  I had been working as the resident Stage Manager at Miner’s Alley Playhouse in Golden for several years and one of the directors gave me an opportunity to direct. It was where I discovered that I wanted to do more female driven projects and that I really loved directing and working with actors.

One of my big take-aways with this project is that if you work hard, have a good attitude, and want and are willing to learn, eventually someone will give you an opportunity that will open a door to allow you to do that thing you always wanted and knew you were destined to do.

Q: Any projects coming up?

A: My current project is a web-series called The Scared List. It stars fellow WIFMCO member Elisa Vasquez. It’s a mostly female lead and driven dramedy about an anxiety-ridden call center employee, who looses her father in a tragic accident and learns to overcome her past and conquer her fears by doing one thing she’s afraid of every week. We are currently in the process of editing the pilot and creating a trailer and promo video to present to investors and use for our upcoming Seed and Spark crowdfunding campaign.  We are looking to have season one streaming by January 2018.

Q: What are your hopes for the film, television and media scene in Colorado?

A: My big dream has always been that we would have a Hollywood type studio and small back lot here that not only would allows to attract Hollywood but can also be a place where we can cultivate our great, local talent and filmmakers. Thanks to Redbarre Digital Media and Technology it looks like it will come true.

Bottom line: I want Colorado to be a place where we all can tell great stories against great backdrops, surrounded by talented people right here in our very own state. I love and am proud of being a native!

Q: Any advice/wisdom to fellow actors, filmmakers, writers etc etc?

A:
  • You’re never too old to pursue and go for your dream!
  • Hard work, a good attitude, and never giving up no matter how hard it is, pays off.
  • Listen!
  • If you don’t have the confidence in yourself at the moment, then trust the friends, family, mentors, and others who do. ...Until you believe it yourself!
  • “Do one thing everyday that scares you.” ~Eleanor Roosevelt
