Welcome to CorpsTHAT!

CorpsTHAT is finally launched!

Welcome to CorpsTHAT's first newsletter!!  We are Sachiko Flores and Emma Bixler and we believe that everyone should have access to the outdoors, and that conserving the environment can build bridges between communities.  From our own personal experiences working in Conservation Corps programs we saw a need for an organization that provides deep understanding and adequate resources for outdoor organizations to become more inclusive to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community, so we started CorpsTHAT.  To learn more about how we got our start working in Conservation Corps, check out our interview with the Conservation Corps of Minnesota.  Also, make sure you visit our website where you can read our bio.

CorpsTHAT works with Conservation Corps and other outdoor programs to develop and support ASL inclusion programs all over the country.  Conservation Corps and Corps programs are service learning opportunities for youth and young adults to give back to local communities and the environment. Corps programs support job training, environmental education and leadership development. We provide Conservation Corps and other outdoor organizations resources for working with the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community, training, education, recruitment and help in hiring qualified interpreters.  Through our website, local events and our newsletter, we promote opportunities for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community to work, conserve and experience the outdoors.

We look forward to seeing you out on the trails!

Sko and Emma

Are you a corps alumni? Do you feel like your service with a corps program had a big impact on your life? Be sure to share your experience with others and with Voices for Service's  #changedbyservice campaign.  They will highlight submissions on their social media and consider your submission for a service story book to be published in early 2017.  Stand out stories will be recolonized at the National Service Awards on Tuesday, February 14th in Washington, DC!  Be sure to tag #corpsthat as well on your social media posts!
We, at CorpsTHAT, think that every day we should opt to spend it outside!  But we know that it isn't always possible.  REI, inc thinks we should at least opt outside on Black Friday instead of spending our day inside stores shopping for the latest deals.  How are you going to opt outside?  Be sure to tag your posts with #optoutside and #corpsthat so we can see how you spend your day enjoying our world.  Also if you are in the DC area, be sure to check out the new REI store that just opened down the street from Gallaudet University! And keep an eye out for REI and CorpsTHAT partnerships in the future!

The Wilderness Society has good tips on how to spend your time outdoors.
