Passing of Ligonier Ministries Founder – Rev Dr R.C. Sproul

December 14th, 2017 marks a great loss with the passing of Rev Dr R.C. Sproul, founder of Ligonier Ministries.  Known to millions of Christians as simply “R.C.,” he was used to the Lord to proclaim, teach, and defend the holiness of God in all its fullness. Through his teaching ministry, many of us learned that God is bigger than we knew, our sin is more deeply rooted than we imagined, and the grace of God in Jesus Christ is overwhelming.[1], wrote Chris Larson, president and CEO of Ligonier Ministries.

Unknown to many Christians, R.C. and Ligonier ministries have long been associated with Chinese churches, especially in the advancing of the gospel through translation ministries.  For many years, R.C. served as a member of Board of Reference alongside with Ligon Duncan, Richard B. Gaffin, Robert Godfrey, Philip Ryken and other Reformed theologians for the Reformation Translation Fellowship in the United States.

In the recent conference in Hong Kong for the 500th Anniversary of Reformation, many translated works by R.C. Sproul, Edmund Clowney, Kelvin DeYoung and John MacArthur were passed out for free.  5,000 copies of R.C.’s The Holiness of God along with 4,000 copies of the accompany teaching DVD were among those been handed out.

We give thanks for what his translated works have accomplished over the years, and continue the legacy he has left for us through translation of his many, many books, writing, and messages.

Books written by R.C. Sproul translated and published by RTF Press over the years:

RTF Press End of Year Report

We give thanks for God’s grace and providence in leading the RTF press ministries over the years; we would not have been able to accomplish so much without His guidance from the beginning.

The year 2017 marks the 500 anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, RTF was present at several conferences participating in the celebration.  We also had a book stale at the recent public lecture in November given by Rev Dr Sinclair Ferguson, by the invitation of our affiliate,  China Reformed Theological Seminary.

China has tightened their policy on import of religious publications in the last two years, which has created significant difficulties for churches in China to receive our deliveries.  We have also seen an increase of illegal prints of RTF and other translation ministries in China; which directly affected the sales of our publication.

RTF Press has always focused on the training of layperson, next year we plan to introduce the P&R “The Gospel According to the Old Testament”, a series of study into the Scripture through major Old Testament figures with Christ-focused theology at an accessible level.

RTF Australia End of Year Report & 2018 Translations Projects

During last year, we were delighted for the publication of “The Victory of the Lamb”, by Frederick S. Leahy, and "Let's Study Luke" by Douglas Milne, both sponsored by supports through RTF Australia.

We would like to give thanks for the generous donation from Hawthorn Presbyterian Church in Melbourne, enabling us to fund our second project of the year, “Lectures on Calvinism: The Stone Lectures of 1898” by Abraham Kuyper.  However, due to the limitation of time, the book has currently been put on hold to make time for other none-public domain books to be edited and published.  From our correspondence with RTF Press in Taiwan, the earliest release date for the translation will be later this year or at the beginning of 2019.

For the year 2018, RTF Australia committee decided to support the following two titles:

  1. Thomas Watson, “All Things for Good” from the Puritan Paperbacks series of Banner of Truth.
  2. Truth Matters”, published by Christian Education Committee of Presbyterian Church of Australia.
Watson’s “All Things for Good” is a classic study on Romans 8:28, an encouragement for his fellow ministers after the great ejection from the Church of England.  He explains how the best and worst experiences work for good.  This book contains the rick exposition of a man who lived when only faith in God’s Word could lead him to such confidence.[1]

Truth Matters”, a short booklet published by the Presbyterian Church of Australia back in 2014 was reissued last year as part of the 500 Anniversary of the Protestant Reformation celebration.  Each of the eight chapters covered the basic yet essential doctrines of the Christian faith, with questions for personal reflection or group discussion.  Such book is in great demand in China where foundation teachings are almost zero among the fast-growing church.

We will be seeking to raise 10,000 AUD for the course of this year for the translation and initial publication cost; you can find our donation details at the end of the newsletter or on our website.

2018 Pray for China Day

It has been our practice in recent years to encourage our supporters and their local congregations to join in a united effort to uphold the work of RTF and the church in China in prayer before the God of heaven. This year we hope that you will set aside the Sunday after Chinese New Year (18th February) or the Reformation Sunday (31 October) as the 2018 Pray for China Day.  We hope that this will provide an opportunity to make the work of RTF better known in Australian churches.  Several resources for you to spread the word about RTF.

The apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthians, “You help us by your prayers” (2 Corinthians 1: 11).  We have valued your prayerful interest in this ministry in the past and encourage you to continue with us in helping those who hunger for the doctrines of grace in China.

2018 Pray Requests

The Reformation Translation Fellowship welcomes you and your congregation to join in a concerted effort to pray for God’s blessing upon the Church in China. We rejoice that many people are hearing the good news of salvation in Christ Jesus. Yet we continue to pray…

  • That the emerging Church in China will be solidly grounded upon the Scriptures and sound doctrine.
  • That ministers and elders would be rooted in the historic Christian faith so that they might train the flock under their care.
  • That RTF would be enabled to translate and distribute sound Reformed literature to all who can read it.
  • That Reformed Churches would be planted and thrive in China.
  • That dangerous cult and false doctrine would be arrested and prevented from spreading.
  • That persecuted Christians and their families would be enabled to stand firm in the faith and speak the gospel boldly.
Thank God that RTF has been able to print and distribute the following titles during 2017:
  • B. B. Warfield, The Plan of Salvation
  • Jonathan Edwards, God at Work
  • G. K. Beale & Mitchell Kim, God Dwells Among Us: Expanding Eden to the Ends of the Earth
  • Douglas Milne, Let’s Study Luke
  • Frederick Leahy, The Victory of the Lamb
  • Loraine Boettner, The Trinity
  • O. Palmer Robertson, God's People in the Wilderness
  • Martha Peace & Stuart Scott, The Faithful Parent: A Biblical Guide to Raising a Family
Pray for those who will be translating, editing, printing and distributing the following titles in 2018:
  • Vern S. Poythress, The Returning King
  • John Newton, Select Letters of John Newton
  • Abraham Kuyper, Lectures on Calvinism: The Stone Lectures of 1898
