Paws 'N Claws
News from All Things Wild Rehabilitation, Inc.
March 2017                                                                                                                         Volume 3, Issue 2
ATW helped over 660 animals in 2016!
This included...
1 bat,
1 bobcat,
1 reptile,
21 foxes and coyotes,
23 fawns,
41 squirrels,
58 skunks,
61 cottontails,
76 raccoons,
169 opossums,
and 208 birds

Why Rescue?
We rescue because, for every animal we see running free, there is one who is fighting for his life; for every animal who is soaring through the skies, there is one in pain without hope for relief; for every baby nestled in her mother's fur, there is one crying out for a mother who will never return. We rescue because mankind is often the source of their pain, and we have a responsibility to do what we can to ease it.

Why Wildlife?
We choose to focus on wildlife because, although we have the drive to help all creatures in need, it is our wildlife whose cries often go unanswered. We choose wildlife because the experience and resources needed to successfully rehabilitate are hard to find, even when those willing to help are not. We choose wildlife because we believe every life is precious and plays an important role in the health, beauty, and survival of our planet.

Why All Things Wild?
We are a dedicated group of extraordinary human beings who spend sleepless nights feeding orphaned babies requiring special formula and feeding techniques, who sacrifice time with family and friends to clean wounds and change bandages on snarling animals, who give up little luxuries to pay for soft blankets and materials for enclosures, and we do it willingly because it feeds our souls and fills our hearts. We do it because we absolutely love it. Choose All Things Wild Rehabilitation because we feel that educating the public about the benefits of wildlife and habitat conservation is just as important as rehabilitating them. The service we provide is free, despite the significant vet bills and food costs, so that anyone, anywhere, can be a savior to sick, injured, or orphaned wild animals in need.

Rehab Recap

Spring seems to have come early! Our rehabilitators are already busy with baby squirrels, cottontails, and birds. Make a donation to our Amplify Austin campaign. Last year, we spent over $10,000 on food and supplies for the wild babies.
  • Elizabeth C. is rehabilitating 2 cottontails with brain trauma and 9 cottontail orphans.
  • Leanne D. is getting ready to release a squirrel and has released a cedar waxwing.
  • Natalie H. is rehabilitating a vulture with a broken wing and a rooster. She recently released a wild turkey and an Inca dove.
  • Shannon K. is preparing to release 7 raccoons and 2 opossums. She is also rehabilitating a baby fox squirrel.
  • Helen L. is finishing up rehabilitation on 3 southern flying squirrels who will soon go to a rehabilitator in Columbus, TX for a soft release. She also has 3 baby fox squirrels and 2 cedar waxwings with brain trauma from flying into windows.
  • Janet P. rehabilitated a dove and a female cardinal.

What You Missed!

January 13: Helen and Elisabeth gave a presentation on the differences between fox squirrels and southern flying squirrels to sixty students at Ruth Barron Elementary. The students were very interested in the topic and had a lot of great questions!

January 14: Amanda Holley gave an informative and entertaining presentation on the sexual behavior of animals. We all learned (and saw!) things we won't soon forget!
February 11: Bonnie Gulas-Wroblewski delivered yet another fabulous presentation at our Lunch & Learn. This time, she taught us all about armadillos. The talk was followed by ATW's first Capture & Transport Training.

February 17: Susanne, Helen, Geri, and Elisabeth represented ATW at the Sun City Nonprofit Fair in Georgetown. Several people expressed interest in volunteering, and we sold suet and suet logs.
Amplify Austin 2017

The countdown for Amplify Austin 2017 has started!  ATW’s fundraising goal for this year is $10,000. We currently have 6 fundraising campaign pages and $1,300 in matching funds towards meeting our goal. The focus now is to continue to tell friends and family about ATW and Amplify Austin and to stress how important their support is to our organization.

Baby season has started and our volunteers have already taken in baby bunnies, squirrels and opossums! We expect the number of calls to our “hotline” to increase drastically as baby season gets into full swing. As an all-volunteer, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, ATW depends on donations, like those made through Amplify Austin, to buy formula, supplies, and pay for the medical expenses of sick, injured, orphaned, and displaced wildlife.

We want to thank you if you have already scheduled your donation. We sincerely appreciate your support. If you have not had a chance to donate yet,
please click here and schedule your donation to ATW now.  (Click on “All Fundraisers” at the bottom of ATW’s page to see all of the fundraising campaign pages!) Be sure to check the Amplify Austin Leader Board during the 24-hour online giving day—Thursday March 2nd at 6 pm to Friday March 3rd at 6 pm—to watch our progress. Thank you for your support!
