Greetings from Big Hearts for Seniors (BHS). Since our event last year, the five BHS programs have remained busy at work supporting older adults in our community. Below is information on our 2021 event (registration will be open soon and we hope you can join us!), a message from our Artistic Director, Breeda Miller, and updates from each of the BHS programs.
BIG HEARTS FOR SENIORS
An evening of storytelling and a silent auction benefitting five important programs that serve older adults in our community.
Ann Arbor Meals on Wheels (AAMOW) Ann Arbor Meals on Wheels Ann Arbor Meals on Wheels seeks to reduce hunger and food insecurity for homebound adults in Ann Arbor who are frail, medically compromised, or have a short-or long-term disability that impacts their ability to shop and prepare complete, nutritious meals. In order to limit the amount of contact between clients, volunteers and staff due to COVID-19, AAMOW has consolidated our meal delivery days from six days/week (Monday-Saturday) into three days/week (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday). Clients still receive the same number of fresh, prepared meals each week on this consolidated schedule. Staff conduct regular wellness checks over the phone with all of our clients and provide social work support that includes addressing tangible needs through our personal care items pantry and other community resources as well as making referrals to additional community supports.
Housing Bureau for Seniors (HBS)
The Housing Bureau for Seniors The Housing Bureau for Seniors team remains dedicated to ensuring older adults remain safely and sustainably housed through eviction prevention, foreclosure prevention and housing counseling programs. Although many individuals in our community are protected by eviction and foreclosure moratoriums put in place by local and federal governments, there are still many older adults who do not qualify for these programs and require assistance. If you or someone you know needs help, call HBS at (734) 998-9339.
Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI)
The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute continues to offer all of our programming virtually. OLLI's winter catalog of offerings is open for registration! In addition to over 50 study groups, new programs include Torn from the News and OLLI@Home. Miss traveling? Do it as an armchair traveler with OLLI Out of Town!
OLLI's free and open to all virtual Commons space also hosts many opportunities for small group visiting and discussion, click here.
Silver Club (SC)
After providing virtual-only programming for nine of the last twelve months, Silver Club re-opened its doors to in person programming with safety measures in place. Silver Club provides socialization and activities for individuals with mild to moderate to dementia. The moderate day enrichment program’s business hours are Monday-
Friday 10am-3pm. Mild memory loss programs (Elderberry for women and Mindworks) are also meeting in person. Silver Club continues to offer virtual programming (sing-a-long) once weekly. For more information visit our website
or Facebook page.
Turner Senior Wellness Program (TSWP)
The Turner Senior Wellness Program is a vital learning, health, and wellness community program enhancing the quality of life for older adults and their families. Offerings include health lectures, exercise classes, healthy cooking demonstrations, technology help, social activities, support groups, an art gallery (Gallery 55+), information and referral services, care consultation, and other special events. TSWP has been hosting all programs virtually since the beginning of the COVID shut down. We look forward to slowly reopening the center as safety permits over the next weeks and months.
