You're receiving this email because at one point or another over the last year, you indicated that you were interested in receiving updates from the Michigan Air Line Trail. This rail-trail will traverse 6.7 miles of the former Walled Lake Dinner Train route and connect the Huron Valley Trail with the West Bloomfield Trail in Oakland County. So, here we are! Updates like this will be delivered on an occasional basis when we have news to share.

By way of introduction, my name is John Hensler, and I'm the manager of the Michigan Air Line Trail. I report to the Trailway Council, made up of representatives from the three communities (Wixom, Walled Lake and Commerce Township) that the trail passes through. Please contact me with any thoughts or questions.  I'm looking forward to helping complete a special link in the outstanding trail networks of Oakland County and the State of Michigan. I'm a huge trail fan and can't wait until this trail – part of a cross-state trail initiative – becomes a reality.

Trail Update

As of this writing, the trail property is still in private ownership, but that will soon change. The Trailway Council hopes to close on the property within a couple of months.  At that point the Trailway Council will own the property, and will then begin the process of designing and funding the trail development.

Bridge Coming

MDOT is working with Commerce Township to build a pedestrian bridge over the busy M-5 highway where the trail crosses the roadway. While not officially a Trailway Council project, the Air Line will obviously benefit from the new bridge. MDOT has secured funding for the project from the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement (CMAQ) Program and construction is scheduled to take place during the summer of 2017.

Next Steps

Soon after the property acquisition has taken place, we will announce a first meeting of the Friends of the MI Air Line Trail.  If you are reading this email, you will be invited. If you know others who would like to be involved, please have them contact us. You can reach us through the still under construction website - – or you can contact me directly at  Thanks for your support of the trail!
