The School Community Network provides a wide array of parent and school resources, including  the School Community Journal. In the Spring/Summer 2017 issue of the Journal, Erin Sibley and Kalina Brabeck have written an excellent article entitled “Latino Immigrant Students' School Experiences in the United States/The Importance of Family-School-Community Collaboration.” The article elaborates on both the risks Latino students face from preschool through high school and the benefits of family-school-community partnerships supporting these students.  That this is an urgent national need is underscored by the following quote from the article:

“The current U.S. legal and political climate acts as an inhibiting environment for many Latino immigrant children, in particular for those whose lives are constrained by their own or their parents’ liminal legal status.” (p. 140)

Don’t have an ipad or a device for every student in your classroom? Plickers is an app that allows for each child to respond. The teacher creates and prints response cards for each student, and the cards can be scanned (like a QR reader) by the teacher’s phone. This app is useful for checking understanding that can be assessed with multiple-choice questions. Once you have scanned all responses, you’ll know which students answered correctly and which need additional teaching. Once you open this site, you’ll be able to link to additional YouTube videos that demonstrate how to use Plickers.
