The EdTech Episode #3

I am writing this episode on a train between New York and Washington after an amazing day at StartEd in New York. The visit represented the start of the Australian EdTech mission to the US, an Edugrowth / Austrade / Navitas Ventures initiative that sees 10 EdTech Founders from Australia learn what it takes to successfully enter the world’s largest Education market.

One of the things that I love about Education is the willingness of founders from around the world to share experiences and help each other succeed. Ash, Shelley and the rest of the team at StartEd have created one of the world’s best EdTech developmental programs, and it has been invaluable for the Australian founders in attendance to spend time with members of their hyper-accelerator program.

The mission will move onto San Francisco tomorrow, and finish at the ASU+GSV Summit next week in San Diego. ASU+GSV is an incredible event in its tenth year, and I have seen it evolve and grow significantly since I first participated in 2016. Over 4,500 education leaders are expected to attend this year, representing a wide range of nations and education segments. For the first time India has a coordinated presence at the conference and I would encourage people to visit the India Pop Up to find out more about a country that will become increasingly important to the global EdTech sector moving forward.

If anyone would like to catch-up at the conference please reach out, or register for the Australian Networking Event on Tuesday 9th April.

Final Thoughts

At a time when we have just a dozen years to keep global warming under the recommended 1.5C, little regulation is focused on controlling the largest contributor of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions - Animal Agriculture.

Per capita meat consumption reached record levels in 2018, while emerging market income growth will make meat-rich western diets affordable to billions of consumers in the coming decades. The most comprehensive analysis of the food system’s impact on the environment has determined that a huge reduction in meat-eating is ‘essential’ to avoid dangerous climate change.

MeatTech may not be term you are familiar with, but the $90B meat industry is going through a period of unparalleled innovation. Viable alternatives to traditional animal sources are emerging, including lab-grown meat, seafood substitutes, and insect protein, that could hit a dinner plate near you soon.
