From The Cockpit

Welcome to our inaugural monthly Newsletter!  It’s been almost 5 months since the opening of our cocktail room and we are excited to share our news with you.  Please remember to follow us on Facebook, Twitter and/or Instagram for our daily updates.

Our goal to provide quality, internationally-inspired spirits is alive and well.  We are working to add new spirits and cordials to our line – watch for announcements in December.  Also, we’ll soon be sharing more information on our barrel aging initiative using the latest technology in the spirits industry. Our single malt whiskey continues to age in the classic way and you will be the first to know when we decide it is ready.

If you haven’t been in to visit the cocktail room lately, make plans to stop by soon!  (Mention this newsletter, and earn a Flying Dutchman BOHO - Buy One Drink, Get One Half Off, during the month of October!)  We’ve answered your requests for additional food offerings by booking more food trucks and adding light snacks to the menu.  We also continue to work with nearby establishments to offer convenient delivery and catering options.  Watch for more fun entertainment options as we bring in more live music performances and game nights.  We warmly welcome any ideas or referrals you might have to enhance your cocktail room experience.

Our goal in the cocktail room is to simply highlight the quality of our spirits and we are in “constant creation” mode.  We can’t wait to introduce you to our fall cocktail menu that will consist of three parts: “Classic Cocktails” featuring classic simple cocktails you can easily make at home, “Seasonally Inspired” featuring fresh ingredients with more complicated recipes, and “Locally Inspired” which is a collection of recipes from our customers and staff.  If you have found a creative, delicious way to use our spirits, let us know - you could earn your 15 minutes of fame right on our menu!

We thank each and every one of you for your support of our craft spirits adventure.  You have supported us by bringing your friends, making suggestions, and many other ways.  Please let us know any suggestions you have

October's Featured Spirit - Mediterráneo Gin

Gin was developed from Jenever, and was embraced by the British Empire (especially in London) when William of Orange (founder of the Dutch Republic) jointly ruled the English throne with his wife, Mary.  Gin is known for its predominately juniper flavor and was used with other botanicals to treat a wide variety of aliments.  We don't recommend our gin as a health food...but take a dose and you'll find yourself pleasantly refreshed!

Tasting Notes
We crafted a traditional London Dry style gin but muted the pine flavor of juniper, allowing the lighter Mediterranean flavors to finish on your tongue. You'll note citrus, basil, thyme, rosemary, and just a hint of olive.

Classic Gimlet

Ingredients:
2.25 Mediterráneo Gin
0.75 lime juice
0.75 simple syrup

Service:
Place ice and water in martini glass to chill while making the rest of the drink.  Shake ingredients together, empty ice water from martini glass, and strain into martini glass. Garnish with lime wedge.

Meet Our Crew

Megan Mahoney, Bartender

Megan has been bartending at Flying Dutchman since the very first day the cocktail room opened!  When she’s not working at Flying Dutchman, Megan works at Urban Village Salon in St. Paul, as a Stylist.  In her downtime, Megan enjoys boating, being with her dogs, and traveling.  We asked Megan to share some of her Flying Dutchman knowledge with you:

What is your favorite Flying Dutchman Cocktail to make?
I like to make the drinks that are authentically beautiful, like our Paloma and Mojito.

What is your favorite Flying Dutchman Spirit to drink?
It’s a tie between the Mediterranean Gin and the Blue Agave Spirit!

What’s the best way for customers to make the most of their visit to the distillery?
I always recommend taking the tour. There are a lot of neat things to learn about the complicated process of perfecting the spirits.

What do you think makes the cocktails at Flying Dutchman so special?
Almost everything, aside from the sodas we use is hand cut, squeezed, juiced, or plucked by us, creating the freshest cocktail around!

Do you have any fun facts to share about Flying Dutchman Spirits?
The arrow on the label of each spirit points to the spot the distillery is located on the aeronautical map.
