In the past several months, there has been a considerable effort to advance on our CYMK membership. There are many Ukrainian Orthodox Youth in Canada, and the leading mission is to extend our associations and connections with all parishes and families on a National Ukrainian Canadian level.
National CYMK is so proud to announce and greet our three newest CYMK local branches! We welcome Regina SK, Oshawa ON, and Montreal QB to our greater CYMK organization.
National CYMK hopes to persist on this resolution and assist the new branches in any way possible. We place confidence in a positive future, with dynamic and enjoyable impending Conventions and retreats, and exceeding benevolence to support our Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada and Ukrainians Nation wide.
We are rest assured that these new locals will provide greater companionship and different ideas on extending our organization’s objectives. We also believe that new friendships are on the horizon.
National CYMK President and the National CYMK Executive look forward to meeting and working with the new Locals on their future achievements and projects.

organized the Orphanage Project over the Christmas season, and have just recently packaged and sent out the donations to Ukraine. Many churches and organizations within Alberta were involved, and we know that the children will be overjoyed to receive the items that we have collected for them
On January 12, 2018, St. John's Senior CYMK organized some carolling and performed a Malanka skit at St. John's Malanka.
On January 28, St. John’s Junior CYMK joined members of the Ukrainian Women’s Association of Canada - St. John’s Branch in visiting the Images of Faith, Hope and Beauty exhibit. This exhibit was made by the Kule Folklore Centre in partnership with the Ukrainian Pioneers Association of Alberta.
had planned to run a small fundraising project in support of the New Chandelier Fund at Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral.
After the devastating fire, the previous chandelier was covered in soot and ash.
With the help of our parent advisor, Pani Michelle Kowalchuk, we cleaned up the old crystals from the chandelier and repurposed them into crystal sun-catchers!
Using jewellery wire, beads and ribbons, we created ornaments ranging in many sizes. We sold these sun-catcher ornaments at a Holy Trinity’s “Get Lit Family Puschenya” and raised over $500 for the New Chandelier Fund.
Ukrainian Orthodox League of USA Convention
The 70th Annual Ukrainian Orthodox League of USA’s Convention and 56th Annual Junior Ukrainian Orthodox League Convention took place from July 26 to July 30, 2017, in Warwick, Rhode Island. CYMK Ukrainian Orthodox Youth of Canada were invited to send a representative to this Convention. William Kowalenko was a guest to the Junior UOL sessions, where he was allowed to observe and take notes on all that occurred throughout the meeting and activities at the convention.
The UOL Convention is similar to the USRL Conventions that are organized every two years in Canada. Following a schedule of various social gatherings, banquets and award ceremonies, formal meetings, Ukrainian Orthodox Liturgy’s at the St. Michael Ukrainian Orthodox Church, RI, and youth discussions and activities, William Kowalenko found that the Convention atmosphere appeared to be contented and tranquil. He enthusiastically attended that when the seniors and juniors went on their sightseeing trips together and endured on group endeavors, it became a positive approach of bonding and building friendships, which then later would help with youth communication and building on leadership, faith, and trust.
However, William Kowalenko has also discovered that the USA CYMK’s major challenge is that they too, also have the same problem as Canadian CYMK and CYC does - after the age of 20, members drop out and do not join the senior UOL later in life. They recognize this problem and continue to work at ways to fix this gap...

...We hope to continue to show pride and represent our Ukrainian Orthodox Youth and Ukrainian Canadians on an International level. We hope to continue on the path of providing the opportunity for more youth to travel and get the experience of meeting members of their own religions and backgrounds around the world, make new friends, and uncover new memories.
"On behalf of the National CYMK Executive, we would like to extend out heartfelt Appreciation and Thanks to William Kowalenko for opting to represent his fellow members by participating on this worthwhile Convention.
Also, we would like to Thank the UOL and their juniors for welcoming William Kowalenko as a guest and participant from the CYMK Organization in Toronto, Canada."

Eastern Eparchy Lenten Family Spiritual Retreat
The annual Eastern Eparchy Lenten Family Spiritual Retreat was held on Saturday, March 3rd, at St. Anne’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church in Scarborough, Ontario.
In addition to CYMKivtsi and parish youth from St. Demetrius Sobor in Etobicoke and St. John’s Church in Oshawa, families from St. Sophia Church in Waterloo and St. Anne’s participated as well.
The program consisted of three parts. Yuri Hladio offered a presentation entitled ““Snapchat, Instagram, and God” in which he addressed issues of identity by contrasting social media as a means of creating an identity and the true identity which is only discovered in Christ.
Fr. Bohdan Hladio, in “The Liturgy before the Liturgy,” demonstrated and explained the meaning of the Prokomedia, which is performed by the priest in the Altar prior to the public portion of the Liturgy, and in which the gifts of bread and wine are prepared for the Eucharist....
This retreat allowed for the Eastern Eparchy Youth from the Oshawa Local CYMK Branch Executive, Toronto Local CYMK Branch Executive, along with the National CYMK President, Tanya Buciora, to become connected together formally for the first time. We look forward to continuing our communication through locals supported on a National scale.
