Words of encouragement
March 27, 2020
Classes will start again for the entire NMSU system on Monday, March 30. I commend all of our faculty and staff who have worked so tirelessly over the past two weeks to make this happen. While we should recognize that our world will be different going forward, we should also be assured that none of us is alone. We’re all in this together.
NMSU still has a mission to serve, and we are more dedicated than ever to accomplishing that mission. We will continue to serve our students and communities around our state. We will continue to provide the very best educational value for the investments made by our students and their families.
I mentioned Monday that during this time, we need to keep three principles in mind for everyone at our university:
- We must ensure that our students, faculty and staff are safe and secure;
- We will work to continue with academic progress, to the fullest extent possible;
- As we start doing things differently, we need to consider what we’ve learned during this process, which can make our university better and stronger.
I have a bit of good news to report. Today, the federal government has responded to this issue, and the president of the United States has just signed the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act. While we are still looking through the details, we are relieved to know this aid package will be of great benefit to our students, their families, our employees and our university system as we cover additional expenses associated with this crisis. The National Association of College and University Business Officers has put together information on this legislation here.
While none of us has a crystal ball, one thing is for sure: We will come out of this pandemic. And when that day happens, I am certain we will all be much stronger than we were going in. I want to repeat what I heard earlier from a colleague in higher education, “Let’s practice distance socializing in addition to our social distancing.” Let’s continue to stick together. I appreciate everyone’s dedication and focus. We will keep moving forward. When you have a moment, please check out this video as well. It was put together by some of our thoughtful folks at the Center for Learning and Professional Development.
Have a great weekend and be safe.
