Mid-Valley Small Farm Program Updates

We've got a lot to share with you folks this month, so we hope you can take a well deserved break, dust off your boots, and sit down with some Small Farms news.

Most exciting for us, we're in the midst of planning for our two big fall events, which we hope to see you at! First, on September 30, we are hosting Día del Campo para Pequeños Agricultores, a Farmer Field Day for Latino farmers. Second, our very own kickoff party will be on October 12. We are having a party to meet our local small farmers face to face!

Last, but certainly not least, our English-language Small Farms needs assessment is rolling out now and our Spanish-language needs assessment will be rolling out in about two months. We strongly encourage you to participate either in person or online; we want to hear from you!

Olive Research Expands to OSU Vineyard Site
Touring the available research plots at OSU's Woodhall Vineyard in Alpine, OR
The olive research project is proud to announce that their olive trial will now take place at two locations: the North Willamette Research and Extension Center in Aurora, and OSU's Woodhall Vineyard outside of Alpine, OR. We are very grateful to the Oregon Wine Research Institute for the opportunity. This second site will allow us to evaluate olives on both low, flatland areas and a sloped hillside, where we expect to see a significant difference between winter temperatures and the subsequent damage to the trees.
Farmer Spotlight
Quail Flats Farm
After many years of doubling the size of his family's backyard garden, Brandon Wagner decided to go big. Farm-sized big. He built a greenhouse, water catchment system, and converted 1/2 an acre of his family's property in Independence to annual vegetable crops. Wagner says he was motivated by a desire to get good food to people and to provide a source of fresh, certified organic produce in Polk county.
