PAST EVENTS
Bay Of Island Vintage Train Ride - Kawakawa to Taumarere
What an interesting and enjoyable trip to the historic town of Kawawa town our WINGS trip turned out to be. We had fabulous weather so were able to walk down Gillies Street, check out the new library and savour lunch at the station café.  Great food, generous portions and reasonable prices.
Thanks to, Anne,  one of the dedicated Heritage Railway volunteers, we learned that this was home to the first Steam locomotive in North island which used to carry high quality coal, anthracite, down the line for export to America. Sadly the town declined when the mine closed and Whangarei took over the port business.
A $5 million government grant enabled the upgrading of the Taumarere bridge so the line will soon go further and be part of the expanding local tourist industry alongside the very popular dedicated cycle track.
If you haven't been on the train yet - do take a ride - every passenger helps to keep it on the tracks!

   Mushrooms and Avos

Coming soon on the country calendar - 6th of November 2022

(featuring some of our WINGS ladies)
"It was interesting to see this beautiful place. I thought the mushrooms were amazing and I was interested in learning that mushrooms should be eaten cooked more than raw to get all the nutrients.
It was fascinating to learn that they are closer to animals than veggies!
What a very complicated business it is! I think I am going to be a regular at Whangarei’s market on Saturday mornings to buy her beautiful mushrooms.
I love the idea of visiting local places like this and look forward to seeing the Country Calendar on the 6th of November!"

"Thanks for having organised this!"

"I had such a great time at the event. I loved learning more about mushrooms and avocados and would be interested in attending a workshop. Tan was knowledgeable and took her time to explain the growing process. Despite the rain, it was an enjoyable event and lovely chance to meet more WINGS ladies."

Wednesday Monthly Meeting - August 2022
The Wednesday meeting was an evening filled with lots of laughter and happy tears.
Avi & Eva organised a few games to get everyone playing.
Guess who am I ? was the first game. Our volunteers were given a mask each and the audience would give them clues to identify themself.
The questions asked by our volunteers were:
Am I a professional? Am I a  human? Am I an entertainer? Am I edible, Do I have to study for it? and many more questions. Surprisingly no one was able to guess until the audience gave an obvious clue.

We moved on to guess the word by drawing/writing it. Funny how the word SING turns into a KID WITH A FUNNY HAT. A pedestal fan turns into a mushroom. The cat in the hat turns out to be a Groom.

The funniest one was our Chinese Whispers the coconut wireless way. Instead of sentences, we had to replicate a few dance moves. Eva started off with the steps and it ended up with moves + words.

We winded up our evening with some delicious food.

Wharepuke Subtropical Garden - Kerikeri
We enjoyed beautiful weather on our WINGS visit to the extensive subtropical Wharepuke Gardens in Kerikeri. The winding trail leads past a large variety of palms, fruit trees, bushes, ferns and bromeliads each labelled and interspersed with eclectic sculptures.

Some of us enjoyed Morning Tea at the Rusty Tractor then later lunch at the newly renovated Plough and Feather behind the Stone House and Kemp Store. Tasty fresh pizza, home-made panacota, live music and stunning views over the Kerikeri Inlet.

The Plough and Feather name celebrates the first use of a mechanical plough here whilst honouring the rich,  local Maori culture.  The tail feathers of the Huia bird were worn by both men and women symbolising leadership and Mana.
