Manawatia a Matariki
"Happy New Year. It is Maori New Year, a time to remember the past, celebrate the present and plan the future.
We were fortunate to have experienced and seen the Matariki cluster stars reappearing in our sky in the Stardom's immersive 360-degree indoor dome" -- Rachel Chrisentina
Saturday the 25th of June at 6 pm, a group of WINGS members and family associates attended a presentation at Whangarei Planetarium organised by Eva and Zainab.
Inside the planetarium, we were addressed by Peter Felhofer and shown how the stars of the night sky rise in the east and rotate about a fixed point and then set in the west through the course of the night. This motion is caused by the Earth's rotation. The planets of our solar system rotate about our sun.
Because, of the difference in the speed between the sun and background stars, the sun sits in front of a different set of stars each month, relative to the Earth.
Groups of stars make up images in the sky like the scorpion. These groupings are called constellations.
We were also shown how the stars of the Matariki grouping were already visible on the South Island. It would be visible in our Northland sky in a month's time.
After spending time inside the planetarium, we moved outside to view the moon and stars through a telescope. Cloud cover hampered the viewing somewhat. However, we all enjoyed what we were able to see.
Thank you Whangarei Asrto Society for an information evening enjoyed by us all.

Wednesday Monthly Meeting - July 2022
|
|
Wednesday's monthly meeting was an intimate and convivial, "get-to-know-your-committee" meeting. We all sat in a circle with the committee on one side. Dawn, the chairman, asked a question of each member, things like "What's your favourite plant/flower" " What's special about your name/nickname" "What game do you like to play" and "What was the first live concert you went to" "Most influential book" etc.
Gladiolus, Rose, Scrabble, Monopoly, Rummikub, Bob Dylan, Tina Turner, Pet Shop Boys, The Bible, Lion Witch and Wardrobe,
It was a nice way of hearing from everyone, and I am sure we were all answering the questions for ourselves in our heads at the same time. Once we heard from the committee, each of us was asked to answer any one of the questions ourselves.
A shared meal followed the relaxed and humorous get-together.
